Wenonah Sundowner ABS Canoe repair

My 17' Wenonah ABS Canoe has a crack thru the hull about 10'' long caused by children walking on it in winter temps. Can I use West System G-Flex to repair crack?

The easiest, cheapest, and most durable solution I have found (after abusing an Old Town Penobscot for 17 years) is Marine Gunk, available in large tubes for a caulking gun. It adheres well, flexes with the canoe, does not separate or crack. I learned this trick from a rental outfitter. You can find it on line from such distributors as Ace Hardware. It requires 24 hours for a full cure and will "run", so be sure the area to be repaired is level. You can build it up in layers if the repair is particularly thick.

No actually you can't.. but heres an idea. get a couple pieces of gum, and flavor you like, and chew it up till its super duper sticky, then take it out of your mouth and stick it in the hole :) and thats its done,

Coleman canoehow do i protect the canoe hull from from fading . iis there a waxing that would be effective?

You could use a product called 303 Protectant (I think that's the right name) every couple of months, and more if you use the canoe, but that would coast maybe $10 each time and I would ask if it is easier to just store it out of the sun, or under a tarp (not wrapped tightly).

You could try a car wax that claims to protect from UV.

Go to a local marine/boat store. They carry fiberglass repair kits for boats that should work on the canoe. There are systems out there that will coat the canoe and make it last a long time. They also have gels that restore the shine to fiberglass that are pretty amazing, but you would not want to put that on before restoring the damaged areas. Using marine-grade plywood would be a good start, but then seal it with a spar varnish in a can to give the wood a long life. The crack in the panel should be sealed as water can collect in that space, hopefully the outside hull only has the cosmetic cracks that can be filled before re-gel coating it or polishing it.

Royalex canoe -wood trim. I live in Canada down to -35F. this winter. I forgot to loosen screws ongunnels. I now have completely through vertical cracks through screw holes in royalex. Suggestions?

Are there washers on the plastic side of this boat? You could get some stainless finish washers to grab the plastic instead of just the screw head. I'm not really sure what you have there without seeing it, If it is that bad, you could also take another piece of wood, to match the gunwale on the outside and put one on the inside. Then drill some neat holes and run screws into the thicker one. I have a strip canoe, with the 2 gunwales, and have no problems with draining the boat or anything like that. Of course we don't freeze down here.

Hi. You will enjoy the 375 dollar fiberglass canoe, especially with all the accessaries! I don't think you could find a better price that would fulfill all your requirements. Fiberglass is easy to repair if damaged. All other surfaces are not and can become unrepairable! Fiberglass is also low maintainance but I would recommend storing it out of the sunlight. When you go for the purchase ask the previous owner if he would mind if you fill it up with water? This is one way of checking the integrity of the hull. My canoe has three seats. If you canoe has no seats sit on your lifejackets and it helps keep any supplies or you bum drier. Have fun! I'm getting ready to write some stories about my latest canoe trip. Canoe has damage on the front bow.

Bondo would probably work.

Also, you could laminate a few pieces of something like vinyl siding/facia board over the hole. If the canoe is ABS, the vinyl siding cold be "welded" / fused to the ABS with PVC primer & solvent/cement.

Easy way to fix cracks and lost covering on the outside of a buffalo canoe due to sun exposure

There is no easy way. Get rid of the canoe. It is not cost effective or even worth trying to resurface a gone surface. Sorry! The good news is that when you go to e-bay or craigslist on your computer you can replace for cheaper and get a better canoe than had you repaired yours. Your canoe would gain weight and you would never feel secure that a breach in your hull would not be forthcoming! Buy a new-used canoe hopefully made of kev-lar or a similar poly substance. Fiberglass, wood and metal all have pluses but the minus's outweigh the pluses. You want "O" maintenance and longeviety of product and usage. I hope I have helped you. Check out my blog at http://wwwcaptcookrules-robbin.blogspot.com I've got a segment on canoeing you might enjoy. Happy canoeing! RB

the transducer has to be in the water or attached to the inside of the hull if fiberglass with no air between the hull and the transducer. It doesn't transmit thru air.

Popular canoe material

ABS, or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, has earned a reputation among canoeists for near indestructibility. It is one of the most damage-resistant canoe materials in use today. Badly dented hulls, even those that have literally been bent around a rock, have been restored to their original shape, without cracks or leaks, by the application of heat. Canoeists have dubbed ABS craft "rubber boats" and with good reason. Since the material tends to flex slightly, it is forgiving, tending to slide over rocks, or bounce off them, with little more than a surface scratch. Some of its limitations are marginal buoyancy - it will float when capsized but just barely, so don't expect to climb into a swamped ABS canoe to await rescue, or to hand-paddle it ashore. Also, when wet, the floor of an ABS canoe is slippery, which can prove troublesome in rapids. ABS canoes require little maintenance and can be left outdoors all year - although ones with wooden gunwales and peaks should be propped to avoid ground moisture. ABS canoes also require special epoxy resins for repairs.
