How do I defragment an iPod

Unlike some personal music players, the iPod stores your music on a hard drive, as well as your computer. This allows the iPod to store lots of music, but also means it is vulnerable to many of the same problems as other drives, including jumping and data fragmentation. Skipping is difficult to avoid, but you can fight against the fragmentation of data with the Windows Disk Defragmenter, the same tool you use your hard drive clean.

1. Connect your iPod to your PC using the USB or Firewire, or placing it in its docking station.

2. Expect that Windows recognizes the iPod. It only takes a few seconds, but you must wait until the possibility of the iPod disk utilities menu.

3. Open "My Computer", clicking the shortcut on the Start menu or desktop.

4. Locate the iPod in the list of active drives in My Computer. Once you've found, right-click the icon and choose "Properties" menu of options.

5. Changing from the "General" tab to the "Tools" menu in the Properties panel.

6. Click the "Defragment Now" and follow the instructions to connect your iPod to your hard disk to defragment.
How to use your IPOD as an External Drive (Mac)

If you're running out of external Hard drives or don't have a Flash drive on hand, and you need to transfer file or simply trying to copy anything externally, don't worry! Ipod can be a useful tools beside from its original purpose, as being a wonderful portable media device, this digital wonder can practically be used a portable external drive, on which you can store files, JUST like an external HDD (Hard Disk Drive) connected to your Mac.

An example of Ipod classic packs a lot of data storage in just a small package, from 5GB up to 160 GB, and in the future, some Ipod will have more capacity (A Gigabytes is a unit of computer memory of data storage capacity, that is equal to 1,024 megabyte, so One Gigabytes is equal to one billion bytes).
To configure an Ipod to be used an an external Hard Drive please follow this steps:
 1. Of course connect your Ipod to your Mac ( Once this is connected iTunes will automatically launch and connects to the Ipod
 2. Select the Ipod on the source list
 3. Click the summary tab, if its isn't selected already
 4. Select the Enable disk use disk box, (at this time you will see a warning prompt that will explain this procedure, because the Ipod will be acting as Hard Drive (Hard Drive is an optical or magnetic disk that is used to read and write information on it)
 5. Click Ok at the prompt
 6. Click Apply, then it is ready to use.
 7. Note: You must manually eject this before disconnecting the device from your computer after you finished!

It says can not sync ipod(-53) What does this mean..how to fix

Hi, message saying "can not sync" means that the connection from the ipod to the computer was not successful..
If you sync your iPod with a different/empty library iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from the iPod to the computer and everything else on it will be erased. You'll find details on transferring purchases in this article: iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer

Purchased applications can be downloaded over again, see this article for details: How to redownload purchased applications from the App Store

If you want to recover the music from CDs etc that is on the iPod and transfer it to your new computer there are a few things you can do. music from CDs etc.) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod Touch or iPhone. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer data (such as playcounts and ratings), movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well.

A selection of iPod/iPhone to iTunes utilities:
Senuti Mac Only (iPod Touch & iPhone compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

One last thing, you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. Open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically" and choose Ok before connecting your device.

Once you have recovered everything from the iPod and your iTunes library has been rebuilt it will be safe to sync again.

How do I completely reset my external hard drive

1. You need to check how much free disk space is available on your laptop.
2. You need to check what duplicated files you have on both the laptop and the external hard drive and which is the latest version.
3. You need to decide to move the latest versions of the data files from the external hard drive to the laptop. This automatically delete these from the external hard drive. The older versions on the external hard drive can be deleted.
4. Now you need to check how much data is stored on your external hard drive.
5. If the amount of data stored on the external hard drive exceeds the available disk space on the laptop, then you cannot copy these files to the laptop.
6. If you have sufficient disk space on the laptop you can copy the data from the external hard drive to the laptop. I suggest you make a folder to copy this data to it.
You can now delete all the data from the external hard drive or you can format the external hard drive to make a clean external hard drive.
