Question about Texas Instruments TI-85 Calculator

Somehow it has set itself to round to the nearest hundredth. I'm doing volume and surface area calculations and need it to show the whole computation. Can you help?

(45.21) ...you round it to two digits beyond the decimal point. 45.2 is to the nearest tenth, 45.20 or 45.21 is to the nearest hundredth.

The 8 after the zero in the hundredths column means that you round the zero to the next number, being one (1), or 45.21, which is 45 and 21 hundredths...or 45.21.

If the number was 45.2048, you would round that to 45.20 to the nearest hundredth.

do you see it now?

You don't need a calculator for that.

- A hundredth is 2 decimal places, so your number looks like

6.45 734

Add the 3rd digit to the right of the decimal to itself. You'll get

6.46 434

Ignore the digits except for two decimal places, you get

6.46

Ta Da!

'

As an example, let divide 15 by 17. I get 0.882352841.

To round to the nearest hundredth, we have to find the hundredths column, look to the digit to the right. If it is 5 or over, we add 1 to the hundredths column, otherwise we don't need to add one to the hundredths column.

I don't know if my spacing on identifying the columns will be retained, so the tenths column is the first one to the right of the decimal. There is an 8 in the tenths column. The next column to the right is the hundredths column. There is an 8 in the hundredths column. In the column to the right of this, we have a 2, so we don't have to add one to the hundredths column. I get 0.88.

Good luck.

After the decimal the digits are tenths and then hundreths (reading from left to right).

So rounding down to the nearest hundredths would be .10

So rounding down to the nearest hundredths would be .10

As I remember it you imagine the decimal point as a 1 and the next figure is tenths and the one after is hundredths. The figure you have is 6 thousandths, almost 7 thousandths.

If you must round it to hundredths it would be 0.01.

If you must round it to hundredths it would be 0.01.

Assuming you do mean to the nearest hundred, answer the question 'is this number closer to 5400 or 5500?' It is closer to 5400 (The first digit to the left of the decimal point is 'ones', the second place is 'tens', the third place is 'hundreds', so you look at the third digit to the left to round to the nearest hundred)

If, in fact, you meant hundredth, answer the question 'is it closer to 5403.26 or 5403.27?' It is closer to 5403.26 (The first digit to the right of the decimal point is 'tenths', the second digit is 'hundredths', so you look at the second digit to the right to round to the nearest hundredth)

Round to three digits after the decimal point, so this is 2.442 .

The first digit after the decimal point is the tenths, the second the hundredths, and the third the thousandths.

Keep two decimal digits after the decimal point (the tenths and hundredths digits). If the third digit is 5 or larger, round up.

(hundreds) (tens) (ones) DECIMAL POINT (Tenths) (hundredths)

So you have six and 28 hundredths. If nearest tenth is 2 the number after it is an 8, therefore the 8 is rounded UP to 10 and the 2 becomes a three.
