You can either burn recovery CDs using software generally supplied by the manufacturer and boot from them or it can be activated by a keypress when booting (usually F12) or many manufacturers also supply a recovery program that can be run right from your desktop that will take the necessary steps to use the installation data stored on the hard drive.

Am trying to reistall Win XP. Have run Fdisk and reformatted HDD. PC will not recognise install CD, keeps coming up with errors, does not find CD or HDD. Hav also tried running setup from floppy, again...

IF the hard drive is a SATA hard drive, you will first of all need to download the SATA drivers for te motherboard and copy them to a Floppy drive on another computer if yours will not work, this may also affect why it is not "seeing" the Cd drive if this is a SATA one too

Try installing Windows and when the message " press F6 if you want to ...." appears, have the floppy inserted in teh floppy drive so it can find thr SATA drivers, it will then recognise the Hard drive and install

If you have further problems please repost

Error message NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

You need to either reinstall windows, or take the hard drive out, hook it up as a spare drive to a working computer and copy NTDLR to the root of the laptop hard drive. It would be much easier to reinstall windows. You can always use the recovery portion of Windows, but if I were you I would just do a format and reinstall. NTDLR is just a startup file for Windows XP, that does not mean your hard drive is gone or anything. Please don't forget to rate!..Thanks
