Question about Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 Hard Drive

Maxtor external Hard drive not recognised on any pc

I have a maxtor 1tb External basic series hard drive and I was moving aload of video files from pc to hard drive yesterday and really pushing my pc to its limits. I cleared all the storage space on it last night (th pc) and the hard drive (external) was connecting fine to the pc until today. The hard drives light is flashing quite quickly but the pc cannot read it noe can my laptop. I know its not damaged and the data is on there is it possible it can lock itself? Reformnatting ideally is not an option.. there is alot of sentimental data on there pictures etc... I was going to back them up today!!! Arggghh too late I figure :( apologies for the punctuation and spelling my hubby is going mad as we lost (it seems) all my daughters pictures and video clips of her growing up....

Sorry to hear of your problems. The following is taken from the Seagate (they own Maxtor) website at :-

For Maxtor Basics and Personal Storage 3100 and 3200 drives, there may or may not be an LED on the power supply, but the light on the drive should usually remain solid during normal operation, while powered on.

1. But if the power supply does have an LED on it, isolate the problem by connecting the power supply into a power outlet without the hard drive connected to it. If the LED blinks in this configuration, the power supply is faulty. Please contact Technical Support for replacement information.

2. If the LED remains solid, connect the drive. Once it is connected, turn the drive on. If the LED begins blinking, the drive has an electronic failure. Please replace the drive. You can create a warranty replacement order to replace the unit.

From what you have said i'm afraid it sounds like there is an electronic failure of the drive. I haven't followed the process through but they do offer a Data Recovery Service at :-

There is an online form to fill in or you can telephone
020 7432 4619 to talk to a Data Recovery specialist.

Computer will not recognise external hard drive


Here are a few things to try. If you have access to a secondary PC or laptop, try connecting your drive to it using a different USB cable. Also try unplugging your drive from the power outlet for a few seconds and then connecting it again. If it?s still not being recognized, Maxtor has a free utility called PowerMax (available at www.maxtor.com) that lets you run various tests on your drive till it identifies the problem.

I dropped my maxtor basics 1tb external hard drive and now it just making a whirring noise is there some way of accessing my files


I have had this happen chances are you drive is gone you can look on the internet and read about a trick and frezzing the hard drive in a zip lock bag but this is the final last resort I had maxtor recover my data if its still under warrenty

Check in the device manager to make sure the drivers are still there.

option 01. try the unit on another windows pc. if its the same. i am afraid you might have an issue with the device.

option 2 . you could remover the **** from the enclosure & fix it directly to the pc so that you can retrive the data. however this will have an impact on your warranty

Apri il prompt dei comandi e digita cd.. e premi enter tante volte quante servono per andare in C:> ; ora digita CHKDSK X: \F dove X: dovrai sostituirlo con la lettera assegnata all'HD in cui non riesci ad entrare, premi enter. In poco tempo corregge gli errori, non si sa (almeno io) come si sono formati, e tornerai a riveder le stelle! Te lko auguro ame ha funzionato

External hard drive not recognised on my ps3??


Ok. Well this is easy! your hard drive is formatted in NTFS, ps3 wont recognize that. it needs to be fat32 find an XP machine not a vista machine.

download Swiss Army Knife and format the drive in fat32. you will loose ALL information in your external. you will need to back up anything you want to save and put it back after the format.

Can't detect an external Hard drive (Maxtor 1TB)


im going to assume your on XP for these instructions. other wise you still need to do the same thing.

right click the my computer desktop or the start menu. go down to properties. open the hardware tab. open the device manager. Scroll down to it, remove the driver, just delete the whole entry. unplug the hard drive, then plug it in again. See if that works.
