Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

Bought an lcdtv (Dell) 26" and caught it from falling on floor - by using palm. The inside of LCD "cracked" or distorted. Distortion at top of screen and lower mid-screen. Can see picture and televised shows clearly when PIP, or where distortion is absent. Is it worth repairing, or should I buy new TV. Was brand new when delivered, but a gift, and I had it unopened for nearly 9 months, before using it. I believe Square trade warranty is stil in effect, but didn't think my accident would be covered. Please advise, and thanks much for help. Wyadore

    Dear Taran,

Thanks for reply. Need to clarify few things though. The TV never hit floor or any other surface other than my hand. I was installing it in space on headboard, and it started to tip. I stopped it from free-fall with palm, but apparently force of impact was enuff to cause some inner cracking. TV works just fine otherwise. (3/4 picture is clear, good sound, color, graphics, etc.) Just wanted to know if screen repair was expensive, covered under warranty, or easy to replace. Thanks again for your help. Dorian Happy Easter (if it applies).

You can try to get fixed under warranty. If they will not cover then it will cost you around $400.00 to fix. Up to you if you want to buy new. I would try warranty first though.

Hi ebolene,

As it fell on floor, this would not cover under the warranty.
I would not advise to repair that as it would cost you more than the price of the new one. Alongwith that, even if you spent so many bucks it would not gaurantee that it would be fixed for long.It might work for 6 months and again starting causing you new problems.

I hope you would agree :)

Thanks for using Fixya.

My screen has cracked due to it falling on the floor. However, i can still hear sound and a picture where the crack is not visible. Can you tell me whether it's worth repairing?

Hello. You have brpcken LCD panel. This is most expensive part in your TV and cost about 80% of whole TV set itself.
It is not worth of spending so much.

If the distortion happens inside windows, this is a graphics driver issue but, on the other hand, if this happens before Windows or outside Windows, this is a video card problem

The color of the wires doesn't matter. That's just insulation. If you are able to see the screen then your backlights are working, which is what the wires you refer to are powering. The distortion is either because your new board actually does have a problem, or because when you attached the ribbon cables, you didn't get them on quite right. Try removing and reseating them.

It would appear you have a damaged LCD screen. The same problem happened to my daughter's V803. The camera will take pictures fine but you will only be able to see them if you download them onto a PC. A replacement screen can be easily ordered and replaced. Call Eastman Kodak. Their parts department can be reached at (800) 431-7278 ext 3. Tell them the model number of your camera and tell them you want to order a LCD screen for it. The cost of the new screen is $31.00 + $15.00 shipping. Don't let them talk you into sending it back for repair. You are looking at a repair bill over $80.00. To replace the screen, remove all of the small philips head screws that are in the chrome band that runs around the center ridge of the camera. After removing the screws, you will be able to separate the rear half of the camera from the front half. The LCD screen is pressed into a rubber gasket in the rear half of the camera. You will see that there is a small, flat orange ribbon cable that connects the old LCD screen to a black connector on the camera's motherboard. Using a VERY small flat blade screw driver, pry up the top tab on black connector. This will unlock the connector and allow you to remove the flat ribbon cable from the black connector. Remember the orientation of the old screen and its cable as you will want to replaced the new screen and cable exactly the way the original was installed. Using the same small flat blade screw driver, pry out the old display. Install the new display into the rubber gasket into the back half of the camera. Insert the ribbon cable into the mother board's black connector and press down on the panel to lock the cable into place. Lay the rear half of the camera face down on the table (rear buttons facing down) and place the front half of the camera over top of the rear half. This will allow you to put the camera back together and help prevent the new LCD screen from falling back out. The LCD screen has pads attached to the surface behind it. When you reinstall the front half of the camera, those pads help hold the LCD screen in place with pressure from the motherboard. Replace all of the screws. If you did it correctly, the camera will operate like new. Last word of advice. Buy a padded hard shell case for this camera. These cameras are well known for LCD screen failures due to shocks and drops.

Good Luck!
