Resolution I can't seem to find out why my tv's resolution on hd channels only displays at 480i? Is there a settings option that I'm missing?

our TV has a 1080p display screen and it does not change. What changes is your input signal. When you see a little message on screen saying "480i" (or anything else), it's telling you the resolution of whatever you have connected to the TV. In this case, it's most likely a standard-def TV channel.

If you *are* using a cable or satellite receiver, you need to get into its menu and set its output resolution to 1080i (which is the maximum for TV channels). Also, it needs to be an HD receiver, if it isn't already.

You only get true 1080p from a Blu-ray player or from certain game consoles.

Video Output Settings Adjust the system's video output settings. Select the best output settings for the TV in use.

Change video output settings.
Change the resolution for the video output. Depending on the connector type selected in step 4, this screen may not be displayed.

Set the resolution.
Select all resolutions supported by the TV in use. Video will automatically be output at the highest resolution possible for the content you are playing from among the selected resolutions.*
* The video resolution is selected in order of priority as follows: 1080p > 1080i > 720p > 480p/576p > Standard (NTSC:480i/PAL:576i).

If [Composite / S Video] is selected in step 4, the screen for selecting resolutions will not be displayed.
If [HDMI] is selected, you can also select to automatically adjust the resolution (the HDMI device must be turned on). In this case, the screen for selecting resolutions will not be displayed.
7.
Set the TV type.
Select the type of TV in use. Set when only SD resolution (NTSC:480p / 480i, PAL: 576p / 576i) is to be output such as when [Composite / S Video] or [AV MULTI / SCART] is selected in step 4.
8.
Check your settings.
Confirm that the image displayed is at the correct resolution for the TV. You can go back to a previous screen and revise the settings by pressing the button.
9.
Save your settings.
The video output settings are saved on the PS3™ system. You can continue on to set audio output settings. For details on audio output, see (Settings) > (Sound Settings) > [Audio Output Settings] in this guide.

You cannot get the TV out off what ever resolution it is being fed with, 720p in = 720p display (HD), 480i in = 480i display (non HD).
The video signals dictate the resolution TV display.
May I ask what kind of problem you are having?

If you are watching over the air channels via an outdoor antenna, the display resolution 480i, 480p,720p or 1080i is set by the broadcaster. If you are connected to a BluRay player, HD cable box or satellite box you need to set the resolution in the source not the TV. The TV only diplays what it receives..Hopefully that was clear...

I am wondering what you are making the connection with, If you are using s-video or composite from your tivo to your hd tv it will only produce 480i. in order to get 480p and above you will need a component video cables or better(hdmi) in order to produce the signal. You may have already known this, but I couldnt tell be the information provided. Hope this helps.

For me it was the cable box settings...

I'm not a tech person, so take this for what its worth. I had the same problem with my Vizio and my Time Warner Cable HD/DVR box using the HDMI cord connection. HD channels were always fine, and non HD channels were fine until I went to an HD channel and back. When switching back, the non-HD channels would be shifted to the left as you describe. After much back and forth with both Vizio and Time Warner (each saying its caused by the other), I stumbled across the following fix...

I went into the cable box (scientific atlanta 8300) "settings", under "display," under "output resolution." There was a list including 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and "auto select." I unchecked both 480 options and left 720 and 1080 checked. Problem solved. The other "Display" menu settings are as follows: Picture Size = Stretch, Aspect Ratio = 16x9.

I had the offset left issue for non-HD channels with my Panasonic 42" plasma, using Comcast HD cable box. Went into the configuration menu (to get there with the newer Comcast boxes, you have to turn the box off, then hit the menu button on the box immediately after). You will see on the menu a resolution (probably says 1080i), then below it a "4:3 override". Our said 480i. When I changed it to "none", so that it stayed 1080i, it worked! It also works by selecting 480p, but then the picture is stretched.

try switching the resolution settings on the DVD player and/or the TV. I have had a similar problem and there was a manual switch i missed.
