Hey, i have a 1999 ttr 250 and it has always been a good bike, but recently it just blows a whole lot of smoke when it is cold and i start it. i have just changed the oil but im not shore if that would help.. just wonderiong what the problem is and how to fix it. thanks, max
The seals in the valve guides are going bad or the cylinder head is not down tight > letting oil into the cylinder, or you have a bad head gasket and "O" ring seal. The problem could be any one of the three causes noted above.
Try tightening down the cylinder head. It may fix the problem. If not then the fix is to pull the cylinder head and inspect the head gasket and "O" ring seal if one is present. If the gasket is dirty and oily then replace the gasket & "O" ring. Consider lapping the valves while the head is off. This will give the valve face and valve seat a fresh mating surface thus providing more power.
If the gasket is clean and dry then the shop will need to replace the valve guides. Be sure they also lap the valves.
Please rate this solution. Thanks
If you are uncertain how to do the repair I would suggest the dealer fix it. The only tricky thing is dealing with the overhead cam timing and the cam chain. Get the timing wrong and the piston could come up and bend the valves on the first kick.
Send me your email address and I will email a service manual that tells in detail how to do the repairs. Look at page 4-62 (page 165 of 295 pages) this shows how to line up the cam sprockets. If the valve guides need to be replaced then hand the bike (or just the cylinder head) to the dealer and have them replace the guides. Special tools are required. Let me know how things turn out.
