When we play DVD's a blacked square covering over 1/2 of screen in the center of the TV appears, it can be manipulated by turning the set off and back on again but it still will finally re-appear. What's going on, We thought it was our old DVd player, bought a new Sony yesterday, and it's still happening, what's going on here?

First forget the DVD.

  • Go into menu
  • and find close caption (TURN IT OFF)
  • If you find (TEXT) TURN IT OFF
those feature specially TEXT is who creates that square. was created for original programers to allow broadcasters send signals. Is not used for anyone. that squre is the empty space to write down a note. as i said not needed there TURN IT OFF. refer to your users manual to get easiest to this area. and read more about it.

Cannot see the screen Philips DVP5990 DVD player. Setting problem

You may have probably turned on Closed Caption on your TV. Unhook the DVD player to find out if it disappears. If it disappears then Closed Caption is on on your TV. Turn off Closed Caption. If cannot find how, give me the brand and model of your TV.

How to fix TV

I have a large black square obscuring the picture. You can see the picture in 1 inch border around the black square. If I reset the input switch, the black square disappears for about one second (the picture is momentarily perfect) and the black square appears again. It is not the cable box because I wired the cable directly into the tv. The same thing happens when I try to play a DVD. Any insights????

Hitachi Ultrascan HD Black square question?

If that black box is generated by Tv, it should be there all the time, like on cable, av input etc.
as you said its not always, so cable top box is suspected which can generate such box as well.
I would suggest when you see that box in tv reception, simply play dvd player and check is that box still appears on dvd input? I hope black box wont appear in playback of dvd player.
Need further help, please let me know.

Big white square appears when playing a DVD.

Check your Closed Caption settings. Either turn it off or change it to text 1.

Black box showing up while viewing DVDs

This sound like a problem with the Closed Caption, on many sets if the C.C. is set to text a black box apears, and since it only happens on DVD you might look at the DVD menu and see if it has this Text featcher in the Closed Caption menu and turn it off

Picture problem

If you have the DVD Player connected to the vcr, it is the copy right protection software that is doing it, this is on every single DVD to defer con artist. A way to fix this, is to get a video image stabilizer, or find a way to work around the VCR. If this does not fix the problem, it is possible that the video output on the DVD Player is malfunctioning somehow
