Trying to start up laptop but all I get is a flashing red light
My ML6232 Gateway lap top will not start up. When I hit the start button, all I get is a flashing red light and then it goes out. All I have is a black screen. The computer has been plugged into the AC but it just appears to be dead. I really need to get this working. Any suggestions
The computer is off, I don't hear a fan or anything. When I wiggle the AC adapator, the charge light doesn't go on or off. I just get the red light blinking maybe two times and then the light goes off.The computer is off, I don't hear a fan or anything. Have you tried taking out the battery, and then starting it up with AC power only. Some models will work this way, some won't. This will eliminate the battery causing an issue.
Also, does the DC jack where you plug in the power wiggle a lot or just a little. I am concerned the jack might be bad and may need to be replaced.
The other possibility is the power board inside the computer might be bad.Have you tried taking out the battery, and then starting it up with AC power only. Some models will work this way, some won't. This will eliminate the battery causing an issue.

Just so I am clear, is the laptop turning off completely, or is there still power to the computer. Do you hear the fan or hard drive?
If there is still power, can you connect it to a monitor and see if it is just the LCD monitor? You may have to hit a Fn key plus a number to change it to display on the second monitor.
Also another thing to check: on the AC adapter, if you wiggle it in the jack, does the charge light go on and off as you wiggle it?Just so I am clear, is the laptop turning off completely, or is there still power to the computer. Do you hear the fan or hard drive?

it might have been dropped, if so it could have bent the little read pin inside causing it to not be able to function correctly, those little harddrives cant take a very big hit
do static discharge
disconnect battery and all peripherals. disconnect from mains. press power button and hold for 30 sec.
Connect to mains and try to turn on again
If it will not start - mainboard needs replacement
thanx
I'm afraid this sounds suspiciously like a motherboard problem. It would help to know what model etc, as some Gateway & EMachine model laptops have had extended warranties due to motherboard issues, or just go to Gateway.com and research it yourself.
press the fn key on laptop hold it down and then press the power key on the laptop. once u see any display on the screen you will get some tests running on the screen. The system will show you the error message which u need to note down. else you can do a Flea Power on your laptop. Remove the adapter and the battery and then press the power button and hold it down for 30 seconds then connect the battery and adapter back and try to turn on the laptop. See if the magic works for you
if your battery is dead and your not able to use the adapter to keep it going, its probably a dead ac adapter. is the light where its connected ? light on the box (if it has one), the outlet you are plugged into have power to it ? try another plug
The key as I read it:: photo downloaded!! Get yourself a bootable virus scanning program , and scan away! goto windows update and acquire the latest updates from them. did you check the memory sticks? Memory chips heats up and cause problems.Scandisk & defrag h/d?
