Question about Sony KV-36XBR400 36" TV

1 Answer

SOUND NO PICTURE

Purchased in early 2001. Several months ago, started receiving sound without picture. For the first few months, if allowed to play without picture for a while and powering on and off a few times, the picture would return. Could always tell when the picture was going to return after power-up cause we would see flash of light around the perimeter of screen, along with the sound of static discharge from the screen. Now it will rarely show picture - no static sound either. Unplugged over night several times, but no change. On one or two occasions recently, picture just popped-in after several hours of play with sound only. Now, at power-up I just hear a click sound followed within a few seconds with a second click that seems to be coming from a different source than the click heard at power-up. Before the problem started, the kids had moved the DVD from the pedestal beneath to rest on top of the set. It remained there for several months. At times, I noticed a purple hue in the upper corner of the screen closest to the DVD player. Could this have caused this damage? Have not been able to isolate the number of standby flashes at power-up. It does not seem to be consistent. Today, during one series of power-up attempts, I got 11, 10, & 8. Several hours later, I got 11, 10, 8, 7, 6, & 5. Repeated attempts yielded 8, 7, 6, & 5. Could this mean that I have multiple problems? Today, I removed the back and found the inside to be extremely dirty; Dirtier than the inside of any PC I've opened. We remodeled the house about two years ago and due to the set's weight, we didn't move it to storage, but simply covered it with a blanket and worked around it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Shuttle83,

On your advise, I called an authorized technician who, from a phone conversation, diagnosed the problem as the "D" board, which he estimated would cost us about $350. He indicated that this was a common problem, of which Sony is well aware. He indicated that there was about a five percent chance that the Board might also have to be sent back to Sony. That would cost an additional $150. "Ouch!!" He dropped by and removed the board, transported it to his shop and returned and reinstalled in about three weeks. Cost about $350. Everything seems to be back to normal.

In my initial inquiry, I mentioned the fact that the kids had placed a DVD player on top of the set, which caused a purple hue in an upper corner of the screen, and asked whether this could have been the cause of the problem. He indicated that the placement of the DVD was not the cause and that "D" board outage for this set (KV-36XBR400) is such a common problem that he has repaired many with the same problem.

He further indicated that salt water environments can contribute to problems with this set. I don't remember whether he indicated that salt water environments mess up the "D" board or other components. He indicated that there is a preventive measure that can be taken, but I don't remember the preventive. Sorry! We're about six miles away from the Ocean - far enough away that salt shouldn't be a problem for us.

Happy again! I Thanks very much for your advise.

Hello, You have a high voltage section problem I would not suggest fixing this set on your own. You will need to take this set to the shop. Because there are no user repairable parts inside of the set.

Westinghouse SK26H240S - Sound works but no picture?

There are two places to look for the problems, the backlight inverter board and the power supply. Look at the power supply first since it is easier to get to, look for burnt parts, bad capacitors, etc.

TV works fine for a while, then the picture disappears.

I would just replace the TV, the parts are not going to be made to repair this. The set is just to old.

there are few problems in different section like

  • sound section for no sound
  • video & crt base  due to low light in picture.
  • red video output circuit.
  • though problems are very easy & can be fixed at your house.but you need skilled technician.

Sound, but no picture. Standby light blinking 5 times

A few weeks ago my set started flashing to a black screen. Now a couple of weeks later, i have no picture, but the set turns on and i have sound. The standby light is flashing. I purchased the set in 2000 so it is seven years old. This is the first problem. Could it be all three of the bulbs? Could it be all three of the bulbs? no as you say that sound is ok that means your power supply &high voltage section is ok. please check chroma ic luminance section or system control section stand by ckt ihanks
