Question about Apple iPod nano

Apple iPod nano

After 6 months of use, my 2nd generation nano now automatically resets (i.e., shows the apple logo) whenever I try to play a song. I can play podcasts, but it resets and goes back to the main menu every time I attempt to play a song or to shuffle songs. I have restored numerous times, completely deleted and reinstalled iTunes, and even took the Nano to the "brain desk"; they gave me a new one, but the problem persists. I have no error message and no indication of a problem until I try to play a song.

The ouput medium does not matter; I will only use it with headphones while working out. I have cleaned (restored) it several times. It did work on my nephew's hip hop songs, but not on the favorite tunes that I have on my computer (which play on iTunes and Windows Media Player. I appreciate the thougtht, but it does not solve the problem.

I discovered that the Nano does work with a small group of files that I purchased from Apple, but not with the over 2700 songs that I have downloaded from my cd collection or purchased from etunes, Walmart and other vendors. It worked with these tunes from January to now. I still need a solution.

I am importing them via the "add Folder" and "Add File" to library; I have always done it that way, and it has worked until now.

Are you importing your songs into iTunes then synchronizing, or are you just copying them to the iPod? If you just copy them, this will happen. Of course, it's not the only thing that can cause the problem.

OK. Not that I know exactly what your issue is but I can definitely see a problem pattern. Couple of ideas...what are u playing this on...headphones or speakers....change to a different output medium...if you are using the FM transmitter...try it without it...use headphones etc. My thought is perhaps whatever you are playing on is shorted out and possibly sending power back into the ipod causing erratic behavior and/or reboot lockup. Second...clean the entire Ipod (reset to factory) and connect it to a different computer and transfer just ONE song and play it. Let me know about how this works out...i am curious about your issue.

My 2nd gen nano screen is gray except for the bar at the top that shows battery life and menu titles

Hi, this seems to be a screen failure, just to make sure, do you still see the gray area when you reboot your iPod? in other words, can you see the gray apple over the black background when you first turn it on?
You can reboot your iPod by holding the menu and the select button (the one you use to pick a song).
If you can't see the Apple logo, then your screen appears to be broken, you're gonna have to take it to a technician. If by the other hand your iPod does show the logo, you really should try and restore it; this will erase all the songs and configurations but should restore your iPod to a working state, to do this just connect your iPod and while on iTunes, press the button that says "Restore".

My 8GB ipod nano froze stuck in the middle of a song. It isn't being recognized by my computer, won't charge, reset, or turn off. HELP!!!!!

Try a hard reset:
Press and hold the Center button, and the Menu button for ten seconds.
This should force a reset, and show you the Apple logo for a few seconds, while it reboots.

Nano shows song playing but nothing happens

Make sure your headphones are working properly by testing with your computer headphone jack.

Is the headphone port on the Nano loose?

Connect the Nano to your iPod dock and see if you can head audio through the docks headphone jack.

If the headphones work, and you can get audio out of the dock headphone port, then there is a problem with your Nanos headphone jack.

Not playing all of the music

To reset an iPod with a Click Wheel, including: ipodnano3.jpg ipodclassic.jpg icon_ipod_5g.gif ipodnano2.jpg ipodnano.jpg ipodphoto.gif ipodg4.gif ipodmini.gif
  • iPod nano (3rd generation)
  • iPod classic
  • iPod (5th generation)
  • iPod nano (2nd generation)
  • iPod nano
  • iPod with color display (iPod photo)
  • iPod (Click Wheel)
  • iPod mini
  • iPod mini (2nd generation)
  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
