What burning software are you using?
I experienced a similar problem when I first installed an LG burner.
I had always used Roxio as my burning software. The unit recognized and burnt CDs properly,
but DVDs always showed up as non-recordable. When I tried Nero software I had no problems.

test using vlc or windows media player classic. If no success there then it means the dvd laser lense in the dvd player / drive has been damaged or broken due to age or other reasons and you will need to replace it should you want to read or play dvds.
