Upon Power Up, the printer cartridge carrier unit slams violently to the left then to the right the stops with the Power Button Light blinking. When the cartridge access door is opened the cartridge carrier does not center and stop in the middle - access position. Additionally, I can't power off the printer the Power On Button just blinks. Prior to this occurance it used to print and run Power-On Test Prints O.K.

I have tried new cartridges and replaced them with the old ones, removed all of them, and the problem still persists. While there may be some issues with cartridges, the Printer Cartridge Carrier slams left and then right then stops, with the Power-On Button Light blinking. I cannot turn-off the power, via the printers buttons.

I have turned-off the printer for a day or so, and when powering it up it still reacts the same way. The violent slaming is one that sounds and appears to be an the physical limits of the carrier space inside the printer. No, it is not being stopped by a ill-fitting cartridge top, as it persists with or without cartidges installed and when the cartridge access door is opened, it does not center the carrier for complete cartride removal and replacement.

Well, after several attempts I just turned off the printer unplugged everything for a day ...Nothing I tried worked.

Then, much to my surprise, I gave the printer on-more-attempt this morning. It appeared to be audibly responding as it was prior to this problem. I turned it off and then back on again and did not experience any violent printer cartridge carrier movement.

I opened the Printer Cartridge Access Door to see the Printer Cartridge Carrier perfectly centered.

I ran several successful test prints and all appears to be fine.

Hi - Lexmark x3350 4-in-1 printer
Color and black ink have been replaced several times.
Printer was working before we went on a weeks vacation - turned off power bar for computer and peripherals.
Returned from vacation and turned on power bar, and pushed printer button.
Printer will not power up when exterior power button is pushed, but, there is a small red light in the left inside/machine internals - when the cover is opened to access the print cartridges.
Red light indicates power is getting inside the unit, but will not power up?

Hello, First of all, let's start with some simple questions. 1 Was the cartridge ever refilled or is it in the original state? 2 How exactly did this occured? I'm asking this because most printers have a limited space inside them for the cartridge to move around when printing. If they don't fit exactly as they should, they will most likely hit something in their movement when printing. If your cartridge was refilled maybe the person who did that didn't attached the cartridge top part properly and now it moved out of position and hits the inner top of the cartridge housing. Please provide me first with these informations so I can better assist you.

That indicates a problem with the printer's firmware. The reason is simple. A motor, coupled by a belt to the cartridge unit, is spining to move the cartridge from left to right and viceversa. Normaly the motor doesn't know where the cartridge unit is, it simply moves it around. The position of the cartridge is determined by the printer's controller (a hardware component) through some small sensors on each side of the maximum excursion range of the cartridge unit. The microcontroller is programmed to work in correlation with those 2 sensors in order to avoid this cartridge slamming problem and to make sure the cartridge prints on the right alligment to the page. If this fails there are 2 possible reasons.

1 The printer's firmware (basic hardware controll software) has produced errors or failed because of various reasons. This things happen out of nowhere apparently. Maybe power spikes, problems communicating with the computer or other things produce these errors. The only certain thing is that when it happens the printer will behave erratic. Some of these problems (like yours) are also followed by some very nasty ink spiting problems. The printer "thinks" it's printing something and begins to spit ink all over the cartridge unit's housing.

2 A very bad problem with the computer driver that's controlling the printer. That's only the cause... however the efect is that the printer's firmware is fooled by the new settings placed on it and produce various errors. Altrough you may disconnect the usb cable or whatever connects the printer to the computer with the problem drivers, the problem persists because it's cause (bad settings) is stored now intro the printer's ROM memory.

For both problems there is only one way for an end user to attempt fixing. (in the second scenario however I may add, for safety reasons it's best to reinstall any printer specific application or driver prior to trying this). Look in your printer's manual for a RESET function (that should be a specific combination of buttons that needs to be pressed in order to reset the printer's firmware to standard setting). As hard as I've tried searching the net I didn't found any user reset tehniques for this printer. Maybe the user manual is more friendly about this function.

Asides from that, the only sure way to reset the printer is to disasemble it and reset the controller manually by either shortcircuiting some pins acording to it's serial number specification or connecting the printer boards to a universal reseter (a hardware tool found in printer service centers).

Whatever tips I can begin to give at this time should start with the fact that it's more and more dangerous to turn the printer on at this stage. Diferent motors or servomechanisms can be damaged by the erratic movement of the cartridge unit, not to mention the whole printer soaked in ink if this starts to occur. Try to see if you can reset the printer from the user manual. If not, I may guide you to dissasemble the printer yourself but however this will be difficult because most of the Z series printers have a pretty nasty mounting so they require lots of patience and tools in order not to damage the ribbons connecting various parts of the printer. Altrough I live in Romania, from my understanding a trip to the universal reseting unit (in a service center) should cost about $10-15 excluding labour part and should offer at least 6 months warranty. If you however want to dissasemble the unit yourself please reply.

The power led flashing you see is an error code for this printer model. However it doesn't tell you much, even simple problems like paper jams, printing errors or such things can result in this led flashing and the printer freezing.

Well that's fortunate. Maybe the firmware settings or other corrupted stored settings have errased because of you disconnecting the power for this long. You're lucky this wasn't permanent like in some other cases. The best course of action right now would be to reinstall the printer drivers (just to be sure you have the default settings and clean driver).
I don't think this problem is going to come back any time sooner.

Turn off the printer by unplugging it from the power outlet. Open the printer cover. Remove the cartridges. Check around the cartridge area for a transparent strip (encoder strip). The encoder strip helps in the movement of the cartridge carrier along the assembly. If the encoder strip is out of position or have gotten loose from its position, it would cause an abnormal carrier travel - slamming on the sides, alignment problem, carrier stalling, etc.
Instructions on how to reseat the encoder strip can be found from the Lexmark website at http://bit.ly/aSibXk.

There should be a clean program that you can run.
First restart windows, then run the clean program,
see if this helps, try and print. If you need more help

Carrier Stall is the error

Hi,
Please do the following..

To check the cartridge carrier:
  1. Unplug the printer.
  2. Move the cartridges to the left by hand and then take them out.
  3. Try to print without the cartridges in the carrier. Do you still receive a Carrier Stall error message?
  4. If not, put the cartridges back into the carrier and snap them in at the back. The message should no longer appear.
If the power light on the printer is not blinking, the error message may be caused by a communication error. Do the following:
  1. Remove any other devices attached to the USB/LPT port.
  2. Uninstall the Lexmark printer.
  3. Connect the printer directly to the PC and ensure that power is being supplied to the printer.
  4. Reinstall the printer.
Thank you....

If the printer carrier is slamming into the side of the printer, please try the following:
  1. Disconnect the power supply from the back of the printer.
  2. Open the front cover of the printer where the cartridges are located.
  3. Look for two black bands that span from left to right (they should have one serrated side and one smooth side). Just above the black bands there is a transparent strip; this strip is called the Encoder strip.
  4. Flick this strip lightly with your finger to make sure that it is running smoothly from left to right. You may need to do this two or three times. CAUTION: Do not pull the strip!
  5. Close the front cover of the printer and reconnect the power supply.
  6. If the problem persists, you may need to contact Lexmark Technical Support.
Let us know how this goes and we can assist you futher, if the printer is damaged and is under a year old, lexmark may be able to repair or replace it for you.
