When I turn the TV set on cold it comes on for 2-3 seconds then immediately shuts off with the power light still glowing and a rapid clicking noise starts. The TV does this 10-15 more times before the picture finally comes on and stays on. I have heard it could be a capacitor, transistor etc etc. Can I fix this myself or should I throw it away?
I don't know where dickturner1 is getting his information, but he should definitely stay an apprentice. There is no "reset button" that power flows through, and to weaken over time. You can't just buy "that part" from the manufacturer. In fact you normally can't buy any parts at all direct from a manufacturer unless you're an authorized servicer.
There are power circuits and parts plenty, though, and these do age and start to break down. From your description, there are probably one or more capacitors which would need to be replaced. They might be in the power supply section, the horizontal circuitry or both. Or there could be more subtle thermal problems with parts so they don't start working correctly until they warm up a little. Unfortunately, troubleshooting takes time, more than just "taking the back off and replacing the part". You can expect the labor will be around $75 to $100, plus the cost of parts. Most shops have a fixed estimate charge. Then you can decide whether to repair or replace the set.
Digikey is very definitely legit. They get lots of my money when I need parts. If you think you can handle the repair then go for it! The biggest part of any repair is finding which parts are bad. Most techs keep a book so they can refer back to solutions and a lot of trading of fixes goes on on the web. So if the hard work is done and all you need to do is pop in the parts, do it. Order some solder-wick too if you don't have any. It's the easiest way I know to get the solder off the joints so you can take out the old part. Post back to let me know how it turns out!

I agree with pga_pa_guy, I have repaired several of that model. My professional opinion, invest in a new one.
As for you Dickturner1, I can tell along with others you should not be allowed to post where you no nothing about. I plan to take this higher.
This is most likely the reset control on the back of the TV. When power is turned on it goes through the reset button and then to the TV. As it weakens over time, it can create the problem you have. See if the web site manufacture will sell you that part, or take it to a TV tech. for replacement, about $10 for the part not including the labor to take the back off and replace the part.

Thanks. I went on a similar site and found that almost every model of this tv has had the same problem, and it was one capacitor and one transistor. It listed a company anyone can order from, and included the part #'s. i checked the company out and it's legit, called digikey. i own a soldering iron and the parts are about .75 cents plus shipping. would it be worth a shot?
