Sounds like your speedo sensor. The magnets on it pick up little metal bits. Pull it and clean it off. If that doesn't work, you need a new sensor,--- If the needle makes the sweep when you're in diagnostic mode, all the more reason to suspect this. I hope this helps.

It is for any thing you may wont to add like extra lighting or 12volt power. They are usually just wired with a hot wire in and a plug or post for you to add a 12v line to assory

Dies with throttle 2008 Harley Davidson FLHRC Road King Classic

I, also, have a 2008 Road King Classic.

Do you get a check engine light when this happens?

On mine, I DO get a light, and it goes into "limp mode", where the power is VERY restricted.

Turns out (in my case) there's a service bulletin about corrosion on the plug connector where the wiring goes into the throttle body.

On mine, I disconnect/reconnect about 3 times, and that seems to remove (by scrapping) the corrosion, and all is good again.

2003 road king speedometer stopped working & the mileage isn't changing either

Check to see if there is any back lighting.

Pull the speed sensor from the transmission case and if there are any metal filings on it clean them off and replace it. If there are not filings you may need to replace the sensor. The speedometer head itself or wiring conneftors could be the porblem as well.
