USP-porti doesn't find the external hard disk - occasionally

I have a Seagate 500GB external hard disk. Just half an hour ago it worked just fine. I did some changes (on iTunes) to my music and suddenly my computer tells me it doesn't recognise the disk. I checked the status of the port and in says no driver installed. But I just had it... what happened? This is not the first time. Turning the computer off and on doesn't help. Neither does changing the port. Please, can you help? I don't understand much about computers, so keep it simple, please. BTW, the product, I'm not sure if it says Pro in it, on the bottom of the disk is says only FreeAgent desktop 500 GB

Re: USP-porti doesn't find the external hard disk -...

I have a Seagate Freeagent 500GB that has been working like magic for almost 3 months.  Suddenly Windows XP pops up a msg that says it can't write to the drive.  Rebooting failed to resolve and now the drive cannot be seen.  The drive power on/off is driven by the USB connection.  USB or internal drive problems will prevent the drive from powering on or off.  I put my drive in the refrigerator for 30 minutes and then was able to get my data off.  My replacement will be a Western Digital!

If it has been working and now does not not. If the system is ME or NTFS[XP /2000/VISTA] If the port check shows nothing untoward Then you must look to the the disc or its connection or power supply. So -if you can check out the power supply Is it self powered[internally of via a 'power brick'] or does it rely on USB power from the computer? If the latter- disable/unplug some other other USB devices. If it 'works on its own power' check that it is indeed running. Change the USB cable for another. Comeback if still in trouble

External 500gb hard drive not readable

Check the partition size in Disk Management (if running Win7 - download a free Partition Manager if not) and see if the system is seeing the partition correctly. Seagate has recovery software available on their website but you may just have to repartition and reformat.

the easiest option is to fragment your hard drive and try to add it on a different computer to check if it has any errors incurring on it. run disk check utility. if that does not work too, better consult the outlet you bought it from and ask for a warantee if it still has.

get back to me if that did not work and we could try to find other alternatives.

thank you

Seagate Freeagent Dropped

Unfortunately what you are describing is a damaged platter inside the hard drive. You may be able to get a technician to recover some data but generally this means the drive is gone forever.

Drive manager is grey and says that no drive is attatched.

You need to get a Seagate Harddisk Utility software to check the disk intergrity.

Although hardware issues like can sometimes be very difficult to fix due to the impact on a volatile component on the harddisk which are most times not replaceable
