Can you tell me what the error code is? I'd be surprised if that old of a machine doesn't need a cmos battery replaced. I'm surprised it's running Win2k.

- Hi, Actually, I'm looking at a 380z right now, and it has one screw from bottom of case, which holds it in place. I don't think that I would worry about the 301 code right yet, as thinkpads are very touchy about the keyboard when booting; in other words, if you hold a key just a bit to long during boot up, it will show the 301 error. As for it not booting to the operating system, probably just need to re-install, or at least do a repair. I bet since you got it in an auctioin, and its as old as it is, the os just needs some help to boot. Good little lappy tho. If it turns out you do have a keyboard problem, I've got about a dozen new keyboards for the 38xx series and would be glad to part with one if you pay the freight. Turn on the machine, wait till after the "press F1 to setup" leaves, then hit F8 repeatedly. Hopefully that will allow you to choose "safe mode" for boot. If successful, let it run in safe mode for awhile, then reboot and see if it works. Good luck
301 indicates a stuck key. Just test each in turn to see if one is immobile. The keyboard is usually held in place by screws on the bottom, which should be marked. Undo the screws and gently lever the keyboard forward. You can then check that the keyboard cable is properly inserted into its socket, or if there is any dirt stopping a key moving.
Hi, The 385xd is a great little laptop. To change the boot sequence you need to go into the BIOS, to do that you need to hold down the shift F1 key, while the system is trying to load. You should see a blue screen with square icons. Tab over to the boot Icon.(or use the red scroll button) There should be a bird cursor, and hit the enter key, from there you can change the sequence of bootup. If you have a startup disk for win 2000, you can use that from the floppy drive after you reset the boot sequence. It will ask bring up a screen and have a list of ways to boot to the hard drive for restore. Hope this helps.
I just woke up to a 502 error (stuck key) After checking the keyboard & disconnecting it I FINALLY got into system restore .After 2 tries 2 that I restored to a point BEFORE I installed SERIF Pages Plus and everything is fine now .(VIRUS)? ....I dont know ,but,I'll just leave that one alone for now! Maybe it's just me, but I didn't like the feeling of maybe having to restore& losing ALL my pictures Saved business cards, etc. I hope this helps.

Gateway M285-E, powers up, power button and wireless light turn on, but no video on screen. A working hard drive from an identical laptop does not boot either (no windows opening sound), no HDD lights on, no optical drive on either. Seems to be a power outage involving the drives and the screen. I know that there are capacitors and resistors that go bad on these, but I don't know which ones are the culprits. Can anyone help me in my misery? Thanks Fred
