Question about Sony RDR-VX555

1 Answer

Cannot record from cablevision tv

THE SONY RDR-VX555 IS A PRETTY GOOD MACHINE BUT IT CANNOT DO WHAT I WANT IT TO DO. I BASICALLY WANT TO RECORD MOVIES OR SHOWS FROM CABLE TV. STATIONS LIKE HBO, CINEMAX AND SUCH CANNOT RECORD ON THIS MACHINE. IT GIVES ME A MESSAGE SAYING THAT YOU CANNOT RECORD COPYWRITTEN MATERIAL. THAT'S WEIRD SINCE I DID'NT KNOW THAT EVERYTHING ON PAY CHANNELS WERE COPYWRITTEN. THE SYSTEM LETS ME RECORD IT ON VHS. BUT IF I TRY TO TRANSFER IT TO DISC, I GET THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE. I SUBSCRIBE TO CABLEVISION IN NEW JERSEY. YOU WOULD THINK THAT IF IT LETS YOU RECORD IT ON THE VHS SIDE OF THE MACHINE IT WOULD LET YOU AT LEAST DO THE TRANSFER.

I have the same problem, it will let me record the audio, but blocks out the video. I've wasted 3 or 4 blank dvd's and have give up on recording any movies on dvd.

I am having the same problem with the Sony recorder. I get audio but no video. Can record onto VHS tape, but not copy to Disc. I have the same problem with Starz / Encore, but not with Showtime...yet. A friend has a new Philips recorder and gets cable from same provider. I will ask him to record an HBO program and let you know how that goes. In reading the HBO FAQs page, we should be able to get a make a single disc copy, but not make copies of that disc. I emailed HBO three times, finally telling them I'm about to sign up for NetFlix. So far, my threat is falling on deaf ears. Sony says to talk to the cable provider. I've spoken with the cable provider and they say everything on their end is okay. I will print comments from this site and take them to BestBuy. When I spoke to them about it, they claimed no one else had reported the problem. That's all I've got this time.

    Hi again,

No solution, but want you to know the steps I've taken since last post:

I had a nice long email exchange with Sony which netted nothing constructive. First they told me that this recorder cannot record digital or HD signals. They said I can only record interlace signals. I told them I've always received a digital signal from my provider and that my problems are only about three months old. Then I was told that hbo and others offer copyright protected programming which cannot be overridden by this recorder. They told me to call their toll free # for more support. I then went a little ballistic and asked why sony even makes this machine?, why they advertise it as a dvd recorder?, why there isn't a big SUCKER sign inside the box? I reminded her that I have paid hbo for the programming and am supposed to be able to make one copy. I was told to call the toll free #.

I have also talked with the girl at the door at Best Buy where I purchased machine. I explained my problem and suggested the store and manager look into this problem and maybe take it off the shelf. I didn't ask for a refund or coupon. I just didn't want others to have our problem. It would be nice if Sony sent us something tho. She was going to talk to the manager.

I emailed Best Buy and got this from Chris of Customer Relations: I am sorry to hear you are unable to make copies of the HBO shows you enjoy watching. I understand how this can be a frustrating situation. I would advise you to visit your local Best Buy and speak with the sales associates who sell the DVD recorders. They would be in the best position to help you find the parties involved or find away to record your HBO shows.
I talked to a few people at the cable provider's office and got this from one of them:

Just as an FYI, I did a Google search and came up with a number of posts of people complaining about not being able to digitally record HBO and some other channels. Some of links I found are below.

I don't know the answer. I will keep trying and report back what I find out

The government required a chip to be put in the recorders to maek sure we are not pirates
in addition the movie people put a flag of some sort across their signal prohibiting us as well

that law was overturned - as you all know we can make copies for personal use - not for sale

however - it is difficult to figure out which ones have it and which ones don't - and which movie companies are not flagging the recordings

Sony is clueless they are a joke -- i asked about the chip and they never, ever answered my question -- avoided it like the plaque

it is archaic - but i suppose we'll have to carry around an old vhs when we want to watch those premium movies that WE PAY FOR !!!!!!!!!

Blinking lights

I left if off and unplugged for a few hours. When I plugged it in it started working again. My recommendation if this happens to you is to just unplug it all and let it stand for at least 4 hours and then plug it back in.

Good Luck
