My hp deskjet 4140 consistently spews 5 or 6 blank pages before printing my document. Also, my computer regularly says I don't have a printer installed despite A) having no other printer installed; B) making sure this printer is my default; and C) installing it to the point that I have it installed 7 times.

If your printer is taking that many sheets then either you are in a very high static area (in which case you need to fan your paper often) or the paper feed roller is worn down. You can try cleaning them with some rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth. They're accessible through the rear door.
