My 942 printer also says it has a carrier jam and has a grinding sound too. How do I clear a carrier jam? There is no paper in the printer. I did have a sheet of paper stuck and I pulled it out.

Can someone please help with this "Carrier Jam" issue? When I turn on the printer, the carrier goes from side to side, and loudly hits each side. Then I get the message "clear the carrier jam." Troubleshooting online at Dell says to make sure the cartridge covers are down tightly. I have checked this several time, and is not the cause of the problem.

I have the same problem with the cartridge carriers going rapidly from side to side and hearing a horrible grinding problem. Does anyone know if there is such a thing as 'belts' for the carrier that could have been broken? If so are there replacements? My printer has been really good up until this problem.

I have the same problem and decided to try cleaning as much as I could without tearing the printer apart. What I found was:

    1. Dead leaf from small hanging plant that used to be above printer area. Solution, moved the plant.

    2. Still had paper jam message. So kept cleaning rollers and what ever space I could. Discovered that the little drive belt on the front roller was broken. Hence why kept getting paper jam message due to the fact the roller couldn't move.

Now I am trying to find a parts list to see if can order the part and or if I can find something similar to the tiny belt.

As an added not I had to use a flashlight to finally discover the broken belt.

I know this sounds stupid, but I read somewhere, on some website, to shake the printer. Apparently paper and other objects might collect and get in the way of the carrier. I tried it, and it solved my problem. I do not know how long it will work for, but I was actually able to print something.

How do I clear a carriage jam error on a Dell 942 all in one printer?I changed both ink cartridges and the carriage moved and let out a scratching sound and the error msg, clear carriage jam came up on the...

Carriage jam errors usually mean something is blocking the carriage from moving. It's usually a crumpled piece of paper left over from clearing a jam, or a faulty purge unit/capping assembly.

You should check to see if the printhead is locked or movable when you power off the unit. If it will move freely when it should be locked then something is blocking it from moving into the "home" position. If there is no foreign object inside then the capping mechanism in the wiper or purge unit may be broken or jammed. Oft times a good disassembly and bath for the purge unit will get it working again. However, this depends on how technically skilled you are and how much the machine is worth. It would take at least an hour in a shop. If you don't do it yourself and the machine is worth less than $100, it may be time to replace the machine.

Dell all in one 942 ink jet printer reads "clear paper jam" there is no paper stuck. How do I fix?

Try this; Remove the cartridges, disconnect the usb cable, turn off the machine, unplug the power chord and switch off the adaptor from the wall switch, leave the machine for few minutes while you do some cleaning, like cartridges contact points, clean the rear panel door, also open the front panel door and check for any foreign particles, you should remember that even a small/tiny piece of thread or hair can create this problem. Now connect the power chord, switch on the wall switch, and power on the printer without the cartridges installed and the usb cable connected. Use the Power Button the switch on the printer. Leave it Switched On for few minutes and again turn it off, install the cartridges, connect the usb cable and again reboot the unit. Press the power button once and again keep pressing when it starts booting. If the problem still persists, your printer needs service.
Good luck.

Dell 942 carrier jam

This morning I replaced the cartridges in the Dell 942 printer, they jammed to the left which made a loud grinding noise and the cartridge jam error came on.

I solved the problem by turning the printer on with the top up which moved the cartridges to the right a little so I could reach back, push one down a little manually which freed them to move over to the middle.

Carrier Jam

This happens, when printer is old one or it has either dried ink on carrier stall bar or some obstructions. Move the carrier stall manually 3-4 times from left to right and then take a damp cloth and clean the metal bar on which carrier stall moves. If you have kleenex and WD-40 nothing like that. Lubricate the bar, with that or some other lubrication agent. Do it once in a month, if printer is too old and/or u use a refilled cartridge. Dell is great!

Carrier jam on dell 924 printer??

I was able to fix this issue on my all-in-one 944 printer. What happened was that one of the ink cartridge lids had popped open. The hard part was that the carrier was stuck on the far left side, and I wasn't able to pull it over for easer access. However, I was able to fit a finger in and push the cartridge back down. Then when I turned the printer back on the error went away.

Hope this helps
