Question about Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL Router W/4 Port Switch, Retail Box (DSLSBEFSR41)

1 Answer

Can't get Internet through my router.

I have a BEFSR41 Linksys router. Yesterday, my computer failed to connect to the Internet. I kept getting the "Page is not available" message. After contacting my ISP (Shaw Cable) and trying a number of unplugging steps and rebooting procedures, the issue was unresolved. It wasn't until I bypassed the router and plugged the modem directly into my computer that I was able to briefly connect to the Internet. Today, I contacted Linksys and told the technician that I was unable to get the IP Address through the router, as my ISP told me to say. Linksys wanted $30 to continueto help, so I said no and found this site on the Internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dennis

I don't know why this worked this time, because I had tried the suggested hookup and wait time a few times already.

I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth, however.

Thank you exnavydavey for taking the time to address this problem of mine.

Ok, first... hook up your router to your modem. Go and get a drink and chill out for 15 minutes or so... that'll give their network time to realize your MAC Address has changed. If it doesn't work, bring up your browser and type 192.168.1.1 (could be 192.168.0.1 as well) in your Address bar. The default login is usually "admin" (sometimes Linksys leaves the User field blank too) and the default password is "password". Check the status page for a WAN IP Address, if you have one contact Shaw Cable and get them to check to see if they can "ping" it (they'll know what that means). If you don't have an IP Address, you may have to use PPPoE to authenticate your account... verify that with Shaw as well. If it's PPPoE, then you should have a username and password that they have assigned to you. If the first line person can't help you, don't let it go... get them to get a Tier 2 or 3 person on the line.

The wait time is to allow the MAC address of your router to propogate to the rest of the servers in their network. Typically, router tables (./etc/hosts) files are only mirrored to other servers at specific intervals. So if you catch it just after the last cycle, it may take longer until it begins again.

Not sure if you just want to expand the amont of computer you can connect to it or the wireless range but I would setup the BEFSR41:
  • Disable DHCP
  • Set an address out of the DHCP scope of the WRT54G
  • Connect them LAN to LAN if not use xover to connect them

Well there might be bug in the CD. sometimes it shows that the internet is not working.
You can set up your router manually without the CD.
If you connect the computer to the modem, it works . right ?
Now connect the modem and the computer to the router.
Reset the router for 30 seconds. Unplug the power to the router. plug it back in.
Wait for a minute and reconfigure the router manually.
