1994 bonneville 3800 engine. I had work done, replaced water pump, and now I have a noise that sounds like a screw or a stone bang around on metal. I took off the serpentine belt and ran the engine for a few seconds. No noise, so it must be related to something the belt is spinning. Power sterring pump, tensioner pulley assembley or the water pump, AC?

If you had no noise prior to replacing the water pump then the noise will be at the water pump. Remove the belt and turn the water pump by hand and you should feel the noise. I suspect fan bolts too long or water pump bolts not fitted in the proper holes and hitting on the pulley. If the problem can be felt in the shaft of the water pump I would take it back to whoever fitted it and have them re do the job as it may be that the impellor is hitting on the inside of the engine housing water jacket.

SOURCE: 1994 grand am high pitched metalic sound coming from near pulleys

There are 2 pulleys that would make that sound. First would be the tensioning pulley, if the bearing is going out. Second would be you A/C clutch pulley, if it is going out. Look close at each, if one or the other is going out. You will see little metal filings below them.

SOURCE: 1994 pontiac bonneville.car starts but stops after

This car uses a key with a transponder chip in it. The ignition reads the value of the chip thru 2 small contacts just inside the entrance of the keyhole. These contacts are known to get dirty, wear out, or become totally disconnected from the wire they are hooked to. Use electrical cleaner in the lock cylider and run the key in and out a few times to clean the lock. This is your temporary fix. The next item you may want to try ,is having another chip key made. If this doesn't work, then you will need to replace the ignition cylinder. You can try "Plastichead Keys" for these parts. They can be reached at [email protected].

SOURCE: GP with 3800 V6 keeps shedding the serpentine belt.

You have got something out of whack there, take a straight edge, like a metal ruler or framing square and line up the pulleys, try to find one that is out of whack. Wiggle the crank pulley and see if it is loose. If the belt is off, wiggle all the pulleys to see if one is loose. One of the pumps, comp, alt, etc, is either bent or has a broken bracket. Is the tensioner tight? Too tight? It should be ok if nothing squeals. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: can you just run the

Nope. Unless you buy a shorter serpentine belt. Not sure what the length would be or how to calculate it.

My 2006 Grand Prix has been over heating for several months now. We've replaced the Thermostat, the Water Pump, and drained/flushed the coolant. We've noticed that the coolant fans are not coming on at...

It should be on the front of the engine screwed into the intake near the exhaust crossover. Look down under the thermostat. It has a metalic paper heat shield around it.

1999 Pontiac Bonneville 3800 engine. How do I replace the water thermostat?

Follow the top radiator hose down. It will connect to the engine. At the point that it connects to the engine is where the thermostat is located. This thermostat cover will have two bolts. Some of the 3800 engines have a temp sensor in the housing. You will not have to mess with the sensor. The housing will have 2 bolts that hold it on. Remove the two bolts and the housing will lift off. And the thermostat will be under the housing. Replace the thermostat. And reinstall the housing.

Just had water pump replaced . whinning noise from

Have you checked all the fluids, power steering especially. The pump will whine if low on fluid. You can check the noise with a long screw driver acting as a stethescope. With the engine running place the metal tip on NON-moving parts only then get your ear next to the handle end. You will be able to hear if the sound is comming from the item you are touching. Move to the next accessory. Alternator bearings will become noisy before failure. Ask your mechanic to use this or a real mechanics stethescope to diagnose your problem. A mechanics stethescope can be purchased at Harbor Frieght for les than $5, it looks like the real ones DRs use with a long metal contact rod.

Replacing bad camshaft position sensor

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Remove water pump pulley attaching bolts, then the serpentine belt and water pump pulley.
  3. Disconnect sensor wiring connector and remove sensor retaining bolt.
  4. Twist and pull sensor to remove.
Reverse procedure to install and prior to installing new sensor, lubricate sensor O-ring.

It is located under the water pump. Make sure when you remove the sensor that you rotate the crank shaft and look in the hole to make sure the pick up magnet is still in there. Sometimes they come loose and cause a no start or long crank. You will need to have the code cleared still.
