I don't think this is a software or OS issue but instead it looks like your embedded graphics chip is malfunctioning.
I am going to make a guess that you have an nVidia chip right?
What is the make and model of your laptop? There is a well known issue with the older nVidia chips that they would overheat and cause the solder joints to crack or separate from the motherboard. The fix for that unfortunately is to replace the motherboard or reball the nVidia chip itself (the process will likely cost you as much as a new motherboard though)

Most of the time if there are still hanging issues after a fresh windows installation, it means your hard drive is dying.

Since they have moving parts, they are one of the first components to die.

Heat would not cause your machine to hang.

Check for heating issues.. Make sure your intake and exhaust for your cooling fan are clear.. Blow out with air.. If fan is running hard and there is hardly any air coming from exhaust ports then you have a major blockage and either can disassemble it yourself of take it to a local shop/repair center.

When I first purchased this laptop I heard something about an update that was needed for either the video or the graphics card, to run properly with Windows 7. I never got the update, and now my laptop...

If you heard about it.. did you try to install it??? (Windows has a nasty habit of installing stuff without your consentement sometimes), maybe the installation of the new DRIVER update went bad, if it's the case you should try to boot in SAFE MODE than uninstall whatever you last installed (or anything relating the video card), than reboot normally... if it works MANUALLY re install the update from the fabricant's web site...

Cheers!

2 nights in a row when shutting down windows updates took forever to install, why so long

Hello there!

As i see you are using laptop for that, well when downloaded a lot of updates at the same time there is a lot of time needed for all of that to install and configure, don't worry that process should be sorted out soon, when there are no new updates awailable.

Remember, its great thing to keep yourself updated! =)

I bought a hp mini 110-1025DX with window xp home edition. Surprisingly, I can not find Chinese language input option in the Language and Region of Control Panel. All listed are western language. How and...

The language packs are downloads through windows update. Click on the start button and there should be a link to windows update there. When windows update comes up on the screen it will automatically scan your system, when it finishes it will say something like new updates available and give two choices...express or custom update. Click on custom and it will show you optional updates for you to download, besides the Chineses language pack, there are many others as well as hardware updates for your metwork cards, video card, modem, touchpad...etc. Windows will download and install all these updates for you and then they will be available to you to use.

Laptop hangs during video-call

Go to Dell support website and check for latest video, & audio drivers and BIOS.

Check back quarterly as Dell is quite good about rolling out updates on a regular basis.

Gateway laptop hang issue

Check the Windows Page File to determine whether it's system managed or manually set. The recommended settings is twice the amount of RAM installed in the machine. If set too low the system will hang often, especially when running memory hungry apps.

I would also suggest checking screensaver and power management options in the control panel.

If those don't work, close any unused applications which run at startup (Start, Run, MSCONFIG). Another possible solution could be updating your display driver.
