These fail. If it was working and if you can see the CD icon but when you put a CD in and nothing happens, it's broken.
You have to replace it.
Good news is, they are not very expensive. These days, you can get a CD-DVD burner for not too much money.

HP Pavillion - DVD & CD drive will not open!

More or less in the centre of the draw front of both drives you should see a small hole.

Get hold of a paper clip and straighten it out, or use something similar, and press it into said hole. It should release the drive draw.

Dvd writer does not write or read any dvd on hp pavillion a1230n windows xp operating system

Try booting from the disc drive with a windows CD. If it does work, then try uninstalling from devices in windows, then scan for hardware changes and re-install. If its still not working I suggest doing a backup of your files and re-install windows, a corrupted registry may also cause this. If trying to boot from CD does not work you will need to replace the DVD drive

Hp cd-writer Not Working

Depending on what HP computer/cd-writer it is the type of disc you are using may not be supported.
Older cd-writers often had a specific type they could write to, CD -r / CD +r.

You should try to find out what kind of discs are supported by your cd-writer. This CAN be located in text on the front of the cd-writer.

I have an HP-Pavillion 01419h, and the Lightscribe DVD Writer / CD Writer thing, were you can play your CD's in the computer doesnt want to work, and when i go to my computer it appears as if there's...

The optical drive itself is faulty. If the computer is under warranty, contact HP to have a tech come out and replace it. As an HP warranty tech, I see this quite a bit.

Ok so my boyfriend thinks he is a computer genius

Right click on My Computer
Select Manage
Select Device Manager
Click on Action and then Scan for hardware changes

That should look for your dvd/cd drive and install the right drivers. After it's done, restart you PC and your drive should be back.
