Working fine then in a span of maybe 30 seconds rainbow colored dashes popped on the screen for a couple seconds then went away. Next was some static and a loud pop like a fuse blew. The picture was instantly gone but the sound is find. Worth repair and if so what is a ballpark cost?

This fault appears on picture tube based televisions are due
to low EHT [Extra High Tension} voltage from the LOT [Line Output Transformer]
or [Fly back Transformer]. There are mainly two cusses for this. The first one is with the high voltage
rectifying diodes. These diodes are
within the LOT itself, and will be sealed; and no replacement can be done. If
the fault is with these diodes/diode; there is no other way than replacing the
LOT as a unit.
The second possibility is with the free wheeling
capacitors. Replace the capacitors
connected to the collector of the horizontal output transistor to negative
ground point. There will be a capacitor
with high voltage ratings. Replace the
yolk return capacitor too. If these do
not help, replace the Line Output Transformer.
The third possibility is with its picture tube
connector socket. This socket can be
located at the CRT base card. This is a common fault seen with most of the CRT TVs.
If this socket have fault, the set will take more time to display
picture. Usually 15 to 30 minutes.
Check its degaussin posistor. Replace it. This component can be located at the main power regulator section. Picture of the suspected component attached.
you can use a demagnitizer to correct the color of you tv.that is available at electronic supply store..keep you tv away from magnetic area such as speaker of your sound system.etc
I bought mine in Jan 2005 and today it did the exact same thing....doesn't go away. Seems like a 5 yr. lifespan on these.

I just had a rainbow of colors on my tv screen...i thought it was a problem with my TV...however the screen went the "sign off" screen (verticle lines-red/blue/green) Then all of a sudden the picture came back and all was back to normal again.
So I say it's nto your TV it is a station problem!
Your problem sounds like someone got a magnet too close to the CRT. This can be removed with a degauss coil (which you probably do not have) or it will eventually go away if your built in degauss circuit is working. Everytime you turn on the set the circuit degausses the crt so colors can be displayed properly. If the circuit is not working you will need to have a tech repair it.
