Question about Vacuums
My Oreck Upright has started spitting out what I want it to suck up. I'm going to try replacing the belt, but someone suggested it is the start of a bigger problem - motor burnout?
Hi. If the motor is on its way out the motor noise will be eratic eg slowing down speeding up popping noise & a smell of electrical burning. If you have none of these symptoms then chances are its not the motor. Does the bag inflate or is it easy to collapse when you push the bag ? If bag inflates ok check belt. If bag not fully inflating check for blockages along length of the handle pipe its designed to pull apart by lifting up rubber sleeve at machine end of pipe, push ball latch in & pull pipe out remove any debris stuck in the pipe. Remove bbottom of machine as if replacing belt check to see if there is any debris stuck in the oppening that goes to motor fan, then check the fan blades you can see them through the port is there any missing or snapped off. If blades are missing or have big chunks missing you will need to replace. If fan only has minor bits missing then reassemble it should now worl well.

Vacuum does not have any suction and roller does not spin, I removed all hair and any thing around roller. I removed tube it was not clogged, air fills up bag, I changed bag it fills with air but no suction.thanks for the input.

Common problem on Orecks, handle tube gets clogged. Some newer tubes have couplings on handle that unscrew, also if any chips on blade it should be replaced since vibration will damage motor bearings. new Blade is plastic composite, but some vac shops have replacement metal blades.

Also, if you have an Oreck XL model in either colour aside from the red model, you'll have to order a plastic fan spare part from Oreck. The Oreck XL uprights in red are commercial style ones and are fitted with metal fans to combat the breakages. Sounds to me like a dust clog which usually happens at the top of the dust tube connecting to the top of the bag.

That the bottom plate off, check for a clog in the inlet. If clear, then you probably have a clog in the handle tube. You will have to take the handle loose to clean it out. It may also need a new belt if you haven't changed it for a while, they stretch.
