My followup work-around: I unplugged the machine and drained the water out of the machine. Apparently there is a "lockout" safety feature that refuses to open the door when there is a certain amount of water in the machine. After draining the majority of the water out, I then cleaned the filter (and more water came out- have the bucket and towels ready!). The ultimate problem was that the pump was shot. While reseaching my own records, I discovered that I had purchased an extended warranty for the first and only time because LG was new to making washers. The pump was replaced at no cost within 24 hours.
