You have a carriage error thats what the error code refers to.
can depends on a lot things but usally not worth fixing if its done lots of prints

Follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Press ON/OFF switch to reset the multifunction device
  • Remove Packing Material / paper jam MP470

    I own a canon printer MP470.it reads error code 5100 anytime i turn the printer on
    5100 is a carriage travel error, something keeping the carriage from moving freely from right to left. Sometimes it is also grease or ink on the plastic strip behind the carriage. You can clean the strip with a damp Q-tip, but very carefully.

    Hi You can Try

    Error Code 5100
    Solution 1:
    Clean the timing strip.

    Solution 2:
    The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough .
