I am trying to get a JD riding mower with a 17 HP Briggs to run that has been parked for a couple of years. Ive replaced gas & filter, cleaned carb and verified fuel pump is working. It will only run if I continue to pour gas in carb. I verified fuel cutoff switch is working properly. Any suggestions? got to be in carb, right?

You need to soak the carb in a good carb cleaner for a couple of hours then blow all passages out with compressed air, this should dislodge any junk.

Hello rfrazierL

>>From your Description it Sounds like the Valves Require Adjusting.
>>The Following is a Basic File I made for Setting the Valve Clearances. Any Input is Appreciated.
>>**I Do Not Use the Setting Called for by the OEMs. I have Found that the Following Works Best.
>>Remove the Valve Cover (on the Dead Cylinder for Twin Cylinder Engines).
>>Check the Push Tubes and make Sure they are Not Bent.
>>Set the Cylinder you are Setting the Valves on to Top Dead Center on the Compression Stroke When Setting the Valve Clearance. Now Loosen the Valve Adjuster Lock and Using a Blade Style Feeler Gauge, Set the Intake Valve Clearance to .004in -.006in and the Exhaust to .006in - .008in. Loosen and Tighten the Rocker Arm and the Feeler Gauge is Placed Between the Rocker Arm and the Valve Top where the Rocker Arm Pushes on the Valve.
>>***BE SURE TO TIGHTEN THE ADJUSTER LOCK AFTER YOU HAVE THE PROPER VALVE CLEARANCE***
>>I have had Better Performance Out of the Mowers and Less Burnt Valves Using these Settings. Be Sure the Piston is at TDC on the Compression Stroke.**
>>If you Remove the Valve Cover and then Turn the Engine by Hand, you can Watch the Intake Valve Movement. When the Intake Valve Closes, the Piston will Just Starting the Compression/Power Stroke.
>>On Some Engines you can Us a Straightened Coat Hanger and Feel the Piston.
>>Be Careful and Don't Jam the Wire in the Cylinder. Usually the Piston will Push the Wire Out of the Spark Plug Hole with No Problems.

Respectfully

John

B&S when you buy there part # 694056... = 10$
carb rebuild kit...they want to sell the manual too !!!
sku# 0 24847 26246 9 ...shame on them !
they are selling manual # 27xxxx for 20$...
to tell you what to do ! ....%$#-THEM !!!
I made a pdf...with before and after pic's of
how to rebuild this carb...it's quite unique in fuel pump design and simplified governor operation...
...
running well this 19.5 twin - fan cooled...is like a 25HP !
the carb kit from B&S is generic...w/extra parts...
I have pic's of the actual ones used/needed for this

There are no jet's to adjust on this carb...

Remove the bottom bowl of the carberator and replace the needle-valve and float - cleaning this area as you do so.  Sounds like the float has a hole in it or the needle valve in the carb is sticking.  Use some fuel stabilizer prior to storing for winter next time, if not the old gas turns to shellac and makes things stick.

17 hp briggs stratton ohc

Clean or change air filter. Clean, gap or change spark plug. Empty gas tank add fresh gas with Stabil. When spark plug is removed pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray starter fluid in spark plug hole before replacing spark plug. Clean outside of carb so choke works freely. Spray starter fluid into carb breather hole with air filter removed and try to start. if running replace air filter and cover. If no start disassemble carb and clean. If no start replace carb.

I got a poulan po1742stb riding mower with a 17 hp briggs n stratton engine it was my dads and it hadnt cranked since he died which was bout 2 years ago so i had to replace the ignition coil and my wiring...

Thanks for stopping by...
When you said "cleaned the carb" - did you disassemble, and clean - or just spray carb cleaner into it?

Sitting for 2 years - the additives in the gasoline can leave a varnish that will clog the tiny jet orifice in the carb bowl.

You'll need to disassemble, and clean out the jet with a wire.

Popping and sputtering can be caused by a few things:

Old Gas - drain and refill with fresh.
Dirty Air Filter - Check and clean/replace it.
Poor Fuel mix/ratio - clogged Carb Jet or sticky butterfly.
Poor Spark - check/change the plug.
Fuel Vaccuum - remove the gascap - and start... the vent hole may be clogged. Clean and/or replace it if it starts running better with the gas cap off.
Clogged Fuel Filter/inlet screen - backflush the tank and the debris should wash back into the tank. Rinse out and re-install.

This is most likely a fuel delivery or spark issue.

Change the fuel and plug first... and give the carb a GOOD cleaning... then re-check.

Thanks!

When you cleaned the carb did you clean out the metering jet with a needle and blow out. It only takes a tiny spec of dirt to raise hell with these small carbs.

Briggs & stratton 550 / surges, gas hog

check your air filter. If it's clogged, the engine will spool up to keep from dying, run for about 15 seconds, then it will happen again. If that's it, just clean the air filter. Solved my problem

Weird under load symptom briggs 17.5

a couple other checks would be to dump the carb resevoir where the float is, water under the float could be accumulated and closing the fuel off, due to density. out here on the farm we never use the gas to the last drop from the can. also the linkage between the motor fan blade, (govenor) might have been connected to the carb incorrectly. or a bad switch interlock on the mower blade.
some briggs motors are hooked wrong straight from the factory, where the throttle linkage is concerned. ( and the little spring is pretty hokey too)
