Re: rust in tub

You should check your manual, as the LSR 7333 has a warranty for the porcelain basket that goes for the life of the machine. Unless you took a knife to the basket, it should not rust in three years. If you've already paid for this repair, find your manual and call Whirlpool. They won't pay for labor, but the basket is under lifetime warranty.

Re: rust in tub

Unfortunatly, this happens every now and agian. Sometimes a button or something will pop a piece out of the porcelain, then you have rust. The problem is, the companies will tell you (which you have probably heard a hundred times already) that if its out of warranty, its not their problem. Other than that. Unfortunatly, out of the few we have delt with, most of our customers either try to find a lawyer or replace the drum. Havent heard anyone being successful in getting satisfaction from a lawyer. Sorry, believe you me I know how you feel. The old saying "They Dont Build Them Like They Used To" really does work now-a-days. Good Luck to you. Jim

The symptoms that you describe are caused by bearing failure. The water seal in the wash tub has failed, allowing water to leak into the bearing causing the bearings to rust. As the bearings start to rust, they will not roll properly and start to make a rumbling sound. The sound get louder the faster the bearing turns.
It a major job to repair since the washer has to be taken apart and the wash drum needs to be removed to replace the seal and bearings. Get a few estimates before deciding whether the washer is worth the cost to repair or replace. Sorry.

Our washer is leaving a greasy residue around and on the top of the drum.

If the age of your machine is over 10-12 years old, you could have a model that uses a transmission and the trans is leaking. If it is the transmission, it could be about a $150+ part.

Older washer designs used a motor to drive a transmission to agitate and spin the wash tub. As these get older, some develop small holes in the drive shaft (up under the agitator) which lets the trans grease get into the wash water. Our old washer lasted 23 years before the tub started to rust, so we decided it was time to get a new one, rather than put money into such an old machine.

IF your washer is older than 15 years, it might be starting to develop some other issues, such as rusting tub, etc., that could be costly to replace those parts, like the transmission, so you need to determine if
you want to repair or replace the machine.

If you can provide a model number, with all the alphas and digits, including the pre-printed ones on the label or tag, it could be confirmed that your washer uses a transmission and that is the likely source of the grease you're seeing.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

My 10 year old Kenmore (Whirlpool) top load washer is rusting under the top cover. The entire cover from the bleach dispenser all around is rusted under the lid. Periodically, rust dislodges into the tub and stains whites. You would have to treat the rust under the lid. I decided to try, using "Rust-mort" rust treatment on a rag. The rust would all have to be wetted with the rustmort after some scrubbing with a scuff pad. I have not attempted this yet.
I went to OSH and checked lids on new top load washers. The lip on the cheaper models was not properly coated with paint, and I could feel the rough partially exposed metal, which would rust. The more expensive models had a smooth well coated lip on the underside of the cover. Hope this helps.

GE washing machine WWA8829

Hate to say it, but even if you can find a new tub, it would cost you more than the machine is worth. The plywood backing gave away the year of this model from the start, so it is an oldie. Even in the repair business, we rarely ever replaced a tub because GE only used a repair stick called "Slap Stick". This was like an epoxy type repair that you molded around the holes. Problem is this stuff will only fill a small type hole. If you are dead set in wanting to keep this washer going, you can run to Home Depot or Lowes and pick up a roll of what I call tar tape. It is a roll of flexable window flashing that is cutable. You cut a peice about three times the size of the hole, pell off the covering, then use force to stick it like tape. This doesnt always work, but worth a try. You can also stick the tape to the bottom around the same area, and have both peices of tape touch where the hole is. Give it a try,

Maytag washer leak

the stem kit, boot seal is worn and leaking. if not repaired soon the bearings on the tub and on the brake package will start to rust and sound like a train going by. After 15 years of service its probably time to replace. Call your local service company and get an estimate on replacement of the seals and weigh that against the cost of replacement of machine. hope this helps. please come back and rate my answer.
