Question about Olympia Startype 3 Typewriter

Olympia Startype 3

This machine seems to start up normally with a return reset to the left side then it lifts the ribbon plate up to the correction position and stops with a constant alarm until turned off. The printwheel does start to rotate slightly and the carraige can be moved freely by hand while the alarm sounds. Nothing is displayed in the LCD at any time.

I have the ribbon and correction tape out. The carrier moves back and forth freely and does move all the way to the left. Just wondering if it is the lift motor because it is not going back down or the print wheel motor because it's not turning. Any thoughts on that. Also, I'd be interested in a parts source for this machine in case it seems reasonable to order parts. Thanks.

With help from JoeS on the Smarka typewriter BB I found a broken wire in the harness to the print wheel sensor. Thanks for your help too.

similar situation to Mr. Clean's,, turn power on, carraige returns to the left, beeping starts and does not stop till you power down. No messages shown on the control panel. Could it be the daisy wheel not seated properly? it seems to be floating free,, i don't think that's quite right. ????????

As soon as my Startype 3 is turned on, a constant alarm sounds until turned off. Carriage moves itself all the way to left and will not function. I see a loose black wire leading to the print wheel section.

How do I fix or how do I find someone locally to repair? Thank you!

On the left side of the carrier you will find a broken wire inside the bundle of wires. This is usually blue or black and goes to the printwheel motor. You can try resoldering.

A couple things to check, lift the cover and make sure there is nothing obstructing the carrier from moving completely to the left. Also make sure your correction tape is not interfering with the print wheel. Try taking both the ribbon and correction tape out and see if the machine will go to ready. If this does not help let me know and we can check a couple other things, But try that first. John

The correction feature is not working correctly. It attempts to lift the incorrect the symbol/letter, but fails. There seems to be plenty of correction tape and the ribbon seems to be on correctly ......

Be sure that the ribbon and L/O are fresh. If so be sure the L/o is installed with the dull side toward the paper and be sure the ribbons are correctable. (YELLOW OR ORANGE KNOB)

Ribbon drive gears are broken . these are two small white gears under the ribbon itself on the right hand side

I can e-mail you a page showing the parts of the ribbon drive mechanism so that you can clarify.... you would then just have to contact a local repair facility for parts.
Provide e-mail if you wish to proceed.

Does it make a grunting noise? If so, it needs a couple drops of oil on the main support shaft. Also check the indent setting. You need to use the code key to activate or deactivate the indent.
