In South Africa there are a few USB (HSUPA stick) dongle's (laptop/notebook) modems available where some work and some don't. I use 8ta (Telkom) which doesn't allow access to UDP 5188 and UDP 5189 yet the CellC dongle USB modem, allows access to Echolink. Two different ISP. 8ta use the Huawei Hilink (E3131) dongle where Cellc use HSUPA ZTE Corporation stick. I cannot comment on Vodacom as I do not use their facilities! Something to consider. At least I now have access to Echolink - albeit having to use a different 'modem'.

Verizon modem/router will not allow echolink.org

Did you log into the routher and allow TDP/UDP ports like the documentation says? You have to set up a map for those ports in the router programming.

I can no longer connect to Echolink

How to set up the ports for Echolink:
  1. Go to this page (link).
  2. Choose the correct router model (if you don't find it, use a model similar to yours. The setup for all Westell routers is almost the same.)
  3. skip the advertisement on the next page (upper right corner)
  4. choose "Echolink" from the list.
  5. Simply follow the instructions.
  6. Voila!
In general:
  1. Important!! (and most often the reason why it is not working): Make sure that yourWindows Firewall is not blocking the application (see Control Panel-> Windows Firewall -> Exceptions) (details also here).
  2. You have to allow UDP destination ports 5198-5199 between Internet andPC in both directions and allow TCP (source port any, destination port5200) from PC to Internet.

If you have any more questions, just come back and leave a comment - I am happy to help.

How to set UDP & TCP port for Echolink

First I assume that you simply posted this under "Linksys > WRT" by mistake and you are using a D-Link router.

  4. choose "Echolink" from the list.
  5. Simply follow the instructions.
  6. Voila!

Opening ports

Echolink uses UDP protocol, you sure you're not opening ports for TCP protocol? There may be other ports that need access as well, google "echolink firewall rules" for more help.
