Re: printing and sending
It sounds like you have a bad scanner. Depending on the age of the machine it may be under warrany. Even if it is not, I would call Brother and complain. I know in the past, they did have some scanner issues that they wewre covering even past the warranty period. Their number is 1-800-284-4357. Good luck

The received fax is clean but when you send one out it has a black streak on it. Cool! So far so good. Makes sense because for sending, the fax scans the original document and parts of the scanning area could be dirty and so on. Therefore a black streak may appear. The same black streak would also appear when you make a copy, because the original document must also be scanned. Logical!
However for receiving faxes, the machine uses the internal memory and the print engine only, and the same applies to printing the transaction report, which comes from inside via the print engine. The scanner has no rol in either situation.
Sending Confirmation This report shows the fax number, the number of pages, elapsed time of the operation, the communication mode, and the communication results. You can set up your machine to print the message confirmation report in one of the following ways (see page 5.3): • Automatically after each transmission (ON) • Automatically only if an error occurs during transmission (ERR) • No report printed at all (OFF). You can print this report manually at any time you want. SENDING CONFIRM - A confirmation report shows whether the transmission was successful or not, how many pages were sent, etc. Select ON to print a confirmation report automatically each time you send a fax. Select OFF to turn this feature off. Select ERROR to print only when an error occurs and the transmission was not successful.
I had the same problem and, like you, went to the internet to find a solution. One answer I found was to unplug the vax, wait one minute and then replug it. This didn't solve the problem for me. Out of desperation, I printed the fax "Help" pagea nd, lo and behold, after it printed my Sharp 510 Fax was back to normal.
Make sure the transmitter knows how to send a FAX, i personally wasted a lot of time and paper because the sender doesn't know that the FAX machine had an automatic document feeder and that all pages has to be put in position before sending, and not page by page while sending. Also see in the FAX manual if it can avoid printing the transmission report. Most Panasonic Faxes can do that.
