SOURCE: Hooking up a fax machine on home telephone line

Well... the problem is that you are running two machines on one line. ONE of them has to take predominance. Both machines should have settings for "number of rings to answer at". It sounds like you currently have the fax set to less than the answering machine, so the fax picks up after two rings, while your answering machine might be set to more, which it never gets to, because the fax answered the call already(It doesn't matter if you answer the phone, or the fax picks up, once the line is open, the answering machine is taken out of the equation). Even if you set the answering machine to answer first, you're then taking the fax service out of the loop. I'm not sure how you're going to juggle that, since both types of machines each need control over the line to work properly. That's why we (business machine folk) always recommend a dedicated line for fax service.

SOURCE: Brother 4100e Fax Problem - Caller ID won't work with Fax Machine

Usually, fax machines don't have caller ID capability.. If the sender's fax number appears on the faxes you receive, it's just that they have programmed it into their fax machine as a header.

I have changed from a desinated fax line to sharing a phone and fax line. the fax machine rings along with the phone however the fax does not answer. i was told to purchase a ring decipher but cannot...

Your fax can share the line with your phone, but it needs to be set to answer or not, depending on your equipment and choices. You can download the manual from Brother here. The receive modes are explained on page 5-1.
If you're often out when faxes or phone messages might come in, you probably need to plug an answering machine into the back of the fax (the EXT. jack) and put the fax in FAX / TAD mode. (TAD stands for Telephone Answering Device. Be sure the TAD is set to answer before the fax does. The fax will pass the phone call through to the TAD, and if it hears the beeping of another fax sending, it will cut off the TAD and take the call.
See the manual for more info and other options.

My intellifax 775 has a code TAD...what does this mean? Will not receive faxes

This means your receive mode is set to TAD or telephone answering device. If you have a dedicated phone line it should be in Auto or automatic receive. There is a button on the panel to change the mode to auto.

To recieve fax on brother

Press the 'RECEIVE MODE' button on the right side of the control panel, its next to the large 'FAX START' button. Here are your options :

Select Receive Mode
—You must answer all calls yourself. If you hear fax tones, press
Fax Start
to begin receiving the fax, then hang up. You can use this mode with
Distinctive Ringing. (See
Distinctive Ring
, page 8-1.)
—The fax machine automatically answers every call as a fax call. You
cannot receive a voice call, but you can dial out and make a voice call.
—The fax machine automatically answers every call. If the call is a fax, it
prints the fax. If the call is not a fax, it signals you with a double-ring (ring-ring),
different from the phone company ringing, to alert you to pick up the call. If you select
this setting, you’ll need to set the Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time features (on the
following pages). If you have extension phones on the same line as the fax machine,
set Ring Delay to 4. (See
For FAX/TEL Mode Only
, page 5-5.)
—This is the only setting in which you can use an external
answering machine. Your telephone answering device is connected to your fax
machine, and answers every call. Once the TAD answers, the fax machine listens for
fax tones. If it detects fax tones, it prints the fax.
The TAD setting works
with an external telephone answering device (TAD); it
does not work with telephone company Voice Mail. Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time
work in this setting.

What does "TAD" mean when it appears on the screen?

TAD is Telephone Answering Device. TAD mode is the only mode that can be used with an external telephone answering device (unless you are using a distinctive ring number for receiving faxes). Your telephone answering device must be connected to the jack on the fax machine (labeled "EXT" for USA). When someone dials your telephone/fax number (to send a fax or to speak to you), all the telephones (including the FAX) will ring according to the number of rings you set on the TAD. The Ring Delay setting is not recognized in the TAD mode. If you do not answer the call, the TAD will answer. As your outgoing message is playing, the Fax is in the background, silently listening for fax tones. If the FAX hears fax tones, it will automatically go into the receive mode. If the FAX does not hear fax tones, it remains silent, allowing the caller to leave a message. The above information is correct for a Brother fax machine. Is your fax automatically picking up the call or do you have to push a panel button to start the receive fax process? Perhaps the fax is already "in" your fax machine's memory and only needs a manual printout. Check the fax call log.

Setting the voicmail

Voicemail or telephone answering device (TAD). There is a BIG difference. Voicemail is product of your telephone service provider. If you have voicemail, most providers have a solution to this that you must arrange through them. If you have an answering machine, you can set your Brother to TAD mode. In TAD mode, if your answering machine picks up, (you must set your answering machine to answer in less rings than your fax), your fax will "eavesdrop" to listen for the fax tones from the sending machine. If it hears these tones, it will disconnect your answering machine and accept the incoming fax. If it does not hear the tones, it allows the answering machine to record the incoming message. If you are home. If you answer the call and hear a tone every 2.5 to 3 seconds, that signals an incoming fax. Simply touch *51 on the keypad of the phone you picked up on. You will hear some shrill tones. That is your fax machine attempting to receive the incoming fax. Hang up the phone you are on and it will receive the fax. In any case, make sure that the receive mode is NOT set to AUTO. Set the receive mode to TAD or MANUAL. If these instructions were not clear enough, let me know and I will send you DETAILED instructions. You can find the manual here: If you need additional assistance, please let me know before you rate this solution. Ed
