Question about Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-30HS420 30" TV

1 Answer

Horizontal Overscan Hello everyone, I seem to be having a problem with my KV-30HS420 it seems to be what i have read to be over scanning one side (the right). Now i know how to go into the service menu but and i feel for good reason i have no clue what to do next (because i hear you can really mess up your TV) is there some sort of number template that someone has on theres that wouldn't mind sharing it with me? Or any advice on how to go about fixing this? Unfortuanlly taking it to a shop is really not possible because it as we all know it weighs as much a metric ton. Thanks in advance!

Horizontal overscanning is due to electrical disturbance in deflection area. Due to dry contacts in soldered points in high voltage area. This can be sorted out by the technical person only. If you are a technician check the above mentioned tips. Also check flyback capacitors and damper diodes in deflection section.

Hi there, we have a sony KV-30HS420 30 inch fd Trinitron that is blinking 7 times and then shuts itself off. We can turn it on again but this problem is understandably quite anoying. What do you think...

There is a power supply fault causing the EHT to rise above 33KV.

High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
Hope that points the engineer in the right direction.

HDMI Video not working on kv-30hs420 but audio works

AmigaDude posts how to reset the video to factory settings here:

The instructions are as follows: 1 - Turn on TV and set input to port being used.
2 - Make sure PS3 is connected via correct cable.
3 - Power on PS3 via power button and HOLD IT for 5 seconds (release after the second beep). It should automatically configure your PS3 to the TV's native resolution for all settings.

Once reset, you'll connect your RCA cables (Red/White/Yellow) and set up the PS3 display settings. To get there from the XMB bar, go to Settings > Display Settings. You might have to disconnect the HDMI cable from the PS3 before the RCA cables work. I don't remember entirely.
Select Video Output Settings > HDMI > Automatic. If you can see the prompt about a max resoultion of 1080i (with your HDMI cable plugged in) you should be good. Select Yes and press X to continue. You can set up the audio but it's not necessary. Select Finish and you should be good.

Sony KV-30HS420 turns off all by itself

This is less a solution than a work-around, but it does work for me, and it is free or low-cost.

I have had the same problem on the same Sony (model KV-30HS420),picture fading out to green then black, then turning off by itself, after which sometimes the light blinks 6 times, other times it blinks 7times. This started about four years after I bought it, which is not adecent lifetime for a CRT TV. It would happen anytime from 2 or 3 timesan hour to 30 to 40 times an hour. After getting absolutely nowherewith Sony, which was completely unresponsive and unhelpful, and which refusedto stand by their product or provide any useful information, I wasgetting ready to buy a new LCD TV, any brand but Sony (never buyanything from them again), when on a whim I decided to try one last stopgap solution.

I put a fan up against the side of the TV, blowing into the vents. Ithas been 3 days now, and not once has the fading and shutting downoccurred. So it looks like the fading out and shutting down wassomehow related to heat, and the ventilation seems to have solved it. I don't know why it should be a problem now, when it was not the first fewyears. It is also a mystery why Sony has not been able to figure thisout, since it is clear from online postings that many people have thisproblem with this model. Give this a try and see if it solves theproblem for you.

Overscan is off a bit

Does's the set have a repair history? If it was previously serviced , the capacitor which is connected between the emitter and the collector of the horizontal output transistor transistor might have been changed with the wrong value, which would cause and overscan situation. The service menu for this set is even hard for technicians to use. It' my opinion if the service manual will not correct the horizontal width, the wrong capacitor was probably installed. Scrivitron (also these sets are known for the forementioned capacitor to short , flame or open.
