Unable to activate Windows -- Keyboard will not work

I'm trying to activate Windows after reinstallation. I couldn't get an internet connection and so I tried to do the over the phone activation. The only problem is that when I reach that point, my laptop touchpad stops working, as does my keyboard. So, I can't type in the numbers I'm given. All of the troubleshooting tips say that I most likely need a driver -- which I have the disc for, but I can't get it to run without activating windows first. At least not that I can figure. HELP! Thanks

Activation will not interfere with anything to do with driver installation, especially as you have 30 days to activate, it's probably something to do with the driver as windows may have installed a generic driver within XP and is not compatable. If you cant get the disc to run, uninstal the keyboard through device manger and then when it reinstalls at the reboot manulally install the driver if you can pointing it to your cdrom disc. If you are able connect a usb mouse for the installation of the driver, but you should get an internet connection as it simply updates the product number, but its unuasual you need to reactivate if you only reinstalled as you have changed no hardware.

What Operating System you are using on your Intel Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook?
If you had the problem because of installing a new driver, try using the F8 button right before your windows starts and restore the Ultrbook back to "Last Known Good Configuration"

The keyboard shows a connection but nothing happens on screen.

Delete device. reinstall. There may be a setting in the device manager that lets you use only one input method. So if the original keyboard will over ride? All this guess work would be eliminated if you give the os pc specs. If it's an external keyboard on a desktop then you may need to disconnect it? A laptop lets you use more than one input keyboard or wifi mini etc.

I need Product Key of my PC

Did you have Windows XP Professional on your laptop before you downloaded it from the internet? If not, that's your first problem.

When you reinstall or download a operating system you must use the one that is on the Certificate Of Authentication (COA) Sticker on the bottom of your laptop or inside the battery case. That's your key on it (the series of 5 letters and numbers).

If you use someone else's disk to install or download like you did you must make sure that it is the same operating system as yours. In other words, if your COA says Windows XP Home, then you can't install Windows XP Professional because when it comes time to activate it will fail.

Borrow a operating system disk that is the same as your COA from neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker and reinstall windows. When it asks for the key, use the key that is on your COA Sticker then it will activate.

If you have to take it to a computer repair shop they should install the operating system for $60 or less if you have a valid COA Sticker.

Try going to dll-files.com and download the necessary file. Copy that file to C:\Windows\System. Hopefully this works for you. If not, you could also reinstall Windows which will reinstall the necessary files.

Unable to get on the internet from my wireless connection

If you have a whitelist on your wireless router in your home, make sure that you are allowed on the list. What is happening is that you are correctly connecting to your wireless network, but your router is not allowing you to access the internet. The problem lies in your router, hopefully that should help.

Reinstall windows xp to laptop now cant connect to the internet

Hi there.
You may have to use a keyboard toggle command, hold down Fn and if you can see a wireless icon on one of the F keys press it.
Hopefully the wireless will activate and connect.
If you can't see the keys post back with the make and model of the laptop.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Unable tio get the EX 100 Keyboard to connect.

i've experienced the exact same problem :
mouse working ok, but i was unable to get any response from the keyboard.

i tried to update the drivers, i tried reinstalling the drivers on a clean boot, nothing would do. but then i tried to use my computer with a classic usb keyboard, which caused xp to detect both keyboards on startup, without managing to install either of them.

so that's how i found out my problem, which i hope is also yours, was that the proper driver for usb keyboards is not signed. so somehow xp would refuse to use it. forcing a manual install of that unsigned driver on both keyboards made the both of them finally work.

so if you have not tried that yet, i suggest you to reinstall your keyboard driver
without letting windows select the driver automatically (forgive any clumsy translation, i'm running a french version) :

1. find your keyboard in the device list (configuration panel > system > hardware > device list)
2. right click on it, go to properties, and choose reinstall driver
3. the installation wizard is then launched, tell him you wish to specify the location of your driver
4. in the second step of the wizard, tell him not to search for the driver, you'll select it manually from the list
5. in the list that appears next, select Human Interface Devices (my driver was in the HID section)
6. among the drivers in that section (there were 2 in mine), one of them is not signed, select that one and install it.

that's how i got my keyboard to work, hope this may be helpful to you in any way

Error message

The most common cause of this issue is not restarting the computer following the installation of Internet Explorer 7. It seems that if you do not restart Windows immediately after the installation has completed, it causes some side-effects, particularly the error you describe. This may not have been your fault, as the Internet Explorer 7 update may have been automatically downloaded and installed from the Windows Update website. After the update was installed, and you were prompted to restart, you might have elected not to restart (as you did not realise the implications of such) and thus now the program does not work correctly. In this case, the workaround for the issue is to uninstall Internet Explorer 7, through the “Add/Remove Programs” control panel, and then reinstall Internet Explorer 7. Make sure you restart the computer once the installation has completed!

Apart from reinstalling Internet Explorer 7 I was unable to find any other workarounds for the problem. Some users have reported having to reinstall Windows, but this is only in extreme cases. In the worst case, you may have to just uninstall Internet Explorer 7 and go back to using Internet Explorer 6. However, I imagine you might like the new Internet Explorer 7 features such as tabbed browsing. Should this be the case, and you are unable to resolve the problem with Internet Explorer 7, perhaps another alternative is to try Mozilla Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox). This is a very popular free open-source web browser, with many of the same features (tabbed browsing, RSS integration, etc.). This could be a useful compromise if you are still unable to get Internet Explorer 7 to work correctly.

Reinstalled xp problem

If your internet connection works try activating it online. If not you will have to call Microshaft and give them the number generated by the 'phone option' if the internet activation will not work.

Call this number to get your system activated.

Just tell them you had to reinstall and you have no major upgrades and you have only installed XP on one system and they should give you a number to plug in so your OS will be activated and good to go.
