Scanner bar stuck

tried to scan a document using my Lexmark 3400 series and scanner bar/arm gets stuck at the end of the cycle making incessant clicking sounds. No display of anything having been scanned, status remains at 0%. Any ideas? Already tried smacking it a few times in all directions....
