Re: USB Storage Device

Yep, both comps are equipped with USB 2.0 The prob is : the USB Storage device worked previous to making h'ware repairs ( SMPS ). Small pen drive works on System but 100 GB drive does not. 100 GB has no individual power supply but draws from USB port. Could this be related to BIOS?

How to disable usb mass storage in windows xp

To disable usb ports we have to do some registry settings and change the key to 4.

"Warning : Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk. If a USB storage device is already installed on the computer"

Follow these steps:

1: Start the registry editor from start menu by typing regedit in Run dialog box.

2: Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/UsbStor

3: In the right pane, double-click Start.

4: In the Value data box, type 4(if 3 is there, change the value 3 to 4), click Hexadecimal (if it is not already selected), and then click OK.

6. Quit Registry Editor.

When you do so, the USB storage device does not work when the user connects the device to the computer.

Help! XP stopped recognizing my external hard drive. It has worked fine for two years and then suddenly: My Laptop no longer "dings" when I plug in the external hard drive. There are no unknown...

No question is silly dear, problems are there and we are in this site to help.

Yes, you mentioned that the said device works fine with your desktop, then it is probably not the problem with your device. You have also said that your tried formatting the os. Good.

Hope your pc, laptop and the memory device are disinfected with a good, licensed and updated antivirus.

Check, if Universal Serial Bus Controllers (corresponding to the nos. of total usb port present in the machine) are present and enabled both in the device manager and the bios as well and set to Hi-Speed if it is Full-Speed.

Well, have you tried formatting the memory stick/device? Format it and see if it works.

Next, please change the usb connectivity cable using/attached to the device and see.

Another thing while connecting an external storage device like ext-hdd. The external usb storage devices that gets connected with a usb cable, in some rare cases needs to be connected as a usb-master or usb-slave [you can see many external usb drives comes with a splitted or dual usb port connector cable, this is either for connecting two usb device or to connect as master when used as a single drive], therefore use such cable to connect and use alternated ports, and see which works.

Now, if all above fails, it then might be the problem with your external drive, i guess.

Best to seek help of your system admin/vendor.

One day, I uninstalled USB Mass Storage Device along with a bunch of other ones (eg. USB Root Hub & some other ones) The USB Root Hubs and the other ones re-installed but the USB Mass Storage Device...

The hubs were most likely the USB hardware that is a part of your computer, but the USB Mass Storage Device is a part of some hardware that you had plugged in at some point (maybe a USB flash drive, maybe a USB external drive). In order to reinstall the Mass Storage Device, you have to plug that hardware back in and let it reinstall. If you aren't aware already, sometimes you plug in one device, but it installs as more than one device (it's actually supposed to). So you won't always have a one-to-one ration of hardware and installed devices, since some of them show up as more than one device. And typically, when plug a new device in for the first time, the computer can only see one device, then it instals that one device, and only then can it see the other (virtual) devices, which it then installs. The next time you plug that device in, it sees & activates all of the devices instantly & silently (not counting the little "plug in" sound it makes).

When I connect to my computer it gives me a message saying device not recognized

Merry Christmas!!!

Greetings for the festive seasons!

It seems like you are connecting a USB device to our computer. USB is a PNP bus. whenever you connect anything to USB, some handshaking is done by the OS with your USB device, so as to recognise its class (if it is a storage device or printer etc,) and other details like its manufacturer, capacity etc. If, for any reasons, this handshaking is not done, this error is raised.

to solve this problem, try following things

1. change cord and try again.
2. If it is a USB hard disk, try twin USB cable. where single USB end is connected to the USB hard disk, and twin USB side (both the pins) are connected to the. PC. It happens, when device is consuming more power, so some additional power is needed to drive it.
3. If it is a mobile, printer or camera, install drivers first and then connect the device.
4. If you are connecting it to front USB ports and the wiring inside is made incorrct. This nmay cause damage to any device you connect to that port. if any other product is working on that port, then simply rule out this probability
5.Try different port, as the device you are using may be using higher version (USB 2.0 or USB 3.0). but this is rare case, as PC itself will prompt you by "This device can work faster"
6. Device itself is faulty. try connecting, similar device to your PC and confirm.

If it is not solved, give brief description of what are you connecting to your PC and what have you tried before.

I cant find the disc that came with my camera when i bought it,can you tell how i can upload my photos pls?

Most modern cameras allow direct file copying. All you need to do is to
1) Connect the camera to your computer using the USB able that came along with your camera.
2) Now the pc will detect the camera and show it as a storage device, just like it would show a pen drive.
3) Now you can open the newly detected storage and there you will find the pictures taken with your
camera.Look inside all folder available within the drive to find your pics.
4) Now you can simple copy the pics there and paste in on any folder/drive on your computer hard disk
like you would copy any other file.i.e,simply selecting all the files you need to upload to your pc,right click
and then select the option Copy, and then browsing to any folder on your hard disk, right click and then
select paste.

Hope it helped, thanks for using Fixya!

Hi, im having problem with my windows usb it cannot be detected by my windows xp.. in the device manager the mass storage device is marked (x) on it. what would i do to make this functional on my...

First of all try changing the usb port you are using I am sure that there will be more than one usb ports in your PC. After this try using another similar USB device.
I mean if you are trying to plug in a Flash drive use a different one or If you are trying to connect an external Hard Disk (as it is obvious from the mass storage device marked with an x as you have pointed out). Try using a different External Hard Disk that you may borrow from someone checks will help you locate the problem. The reason why your USB device is not being detected by your PC must be the driver of the USB drive is out dated. Check the version of the USB Is it 2.0? or the driver might have been corrupt.
You can download USB Mass storage driver from the following site. You can search for USB drivers on other sites also.

Best of Luck!

Inability to recognize Kingston pendrive in windows98

Windows 98 is not capable of recornizing the mass storage devices, but windows 2000 and XP, vista has the capability to automatically recognize the USB mass storage devices.

Thats why your Windows 98 is not recognizing. So, to use the mass-storage device like your pen drive you have to install device driver to your windows 98 system for your pendrive.

If you don't have the driver, then goto pendrive manufacturer site, there you can found the driver for your pen-drive for windows 98, download it, and install on your windows 98 system..... n njoy,,... :))

Which drivers for USB External Hard Drive ?

Well, Occam's razor philosophy!  I just tried on my 250 Gb IOMEGA external HDD on Win98 and it worked. "Mass storage" jargon driver does NOT work. HOWEVER if you declare it as "USB FLASH DISK", it WORKS, (after computer reboots), though not that speedy. Anyway, you can do your job. Now if you have found any better solution, please forward it at Thank you!
