Refrigerator

I have a GE Refrigerator (1999) Model No TBG18DAYJRWW.

The fresh food compartment gets too warm. I then empty the freezer compartment, remove the back cover and the defrost coils are frozen solid. I manually defrost the unit and it runs perfectly for 3 weeks. Then I have to repeat the above.

I have read the various articles and have narrowed the problem down to 1 of 3 components.

The defrost thermostat
The defrost timer
The heater.

When I look at the defrost coils there are 2 defrost thermostat units (L55-30) components. Why 2? and how do I determine which one is defective?

Where in the refrigerator would I find the defrost timer?

Thanks, Liam Devlin

-   I have the same problem, except mine is a Sansung. The freezer side is working fine, but the fresh food side will either be at the correct setting, or at about 53 degrees. This unit is running a single compressor, but claims to have separate condensers. Can anyone help. This unit is in Mexico and about 150 miles from any access to any technical help.

Thank for any comments.-   Richard_R_Da

Have looked at the schematics for this cabinet and am unsure as to the location of both defrost thermostats as unclear on drawings. The purpose of the defrost thermostat is to overide the heater and end the defrost cycle, once the temperature on the evaporator is high enough (normally around 0'C). If you have two then one will probably control the heaters going off and the other may well control the fan, for coming back on. I.E. once the defrost has ended the second sensor will tell the fan when the coil is cold enough to come on, this prevents heat being pushed into the main area after a defrost cycle. If you feel competent enough then I would bypass the heater thermostat temporarily and see if the heaters kick in. The other thing to check is that you have a resistance across the two ends of the defrost heater. In my experience the heater is the most likely to fail, the sensor sometimes fail and the timers rarely fail. The age of your cabinet would suggest the heaters. Please do not leave the sensor bypassed as it performs an essential role. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem my one stops working because it is frozen solid and its a frost free. I then defrost it and works for a while then does the same again. What can I do?
