When you change geographical locations that far it will take some time for the GPS to acquire and lock onto satellites. That does seem a little long though. Make sure you have a open sky and not around a bunch of tall structures like trees and buildings. Try it again and be patient. I think you will be ok. There may also be a setting in the GPS to tell the operating system what state you are located in but I am not familar with the Magellan Maestro.

Is the Detroit airport canceling flights to fl

If you examine the follow map and consider its "legend", you find that air traffic is normal in Detroit and that it is normal at some airports but not all in Florida. One would have to know the destination airport tied to a particular filght to even guess if there was a cancellation. I would go to my airline's site on the web and check the status of a particular flight. Fort Lauderdale is experiencing major delays, Orlando is not. Given changing weather conditions, I might be running a real time app on my phone that notified me of the status of a particular flight.

Do domestic flights fly over foreign airspace?

Technically is you are flying domestic you are not flying over foreign airspace. If flying IFR you must file one. Needless to say when filing a flight plan you must decalre if you are domestic of international flight.

How is a pilot supposed to find out their distance in miles from an airport they're landing at?

Using the old (pre GPS) method you would use the sectional and plotter (aviation ruler) and measure the distance. Using a GPS you can usually turn on distance rings on the screen or if you have the airport selected as destination you can read it right off the screen. If it's your home base you should learn the landmarks and their distances from the airport. In the Miami area, there are so many airports and landmarks, if you're flying there, during your preflight preps you should measure out distances to some landmarks that you plan to pass over and mark them on the chart or flight log.
