I work on these everyday. You most likely have a bad rotor or stater if the starter engages while running and no output. The no out put is making the generator think its not running causing it to try and start. If its not that then its the control board or voltage regulator.

Behind starter fly wheel only moves back not forward wil not start not start starter seems like its working spins

Disconnect the battery and then carefully remove the starter. Take the unit to a local auto parts dealer for a bench test. Starters have two separate functions, one spins the shaft to crank the engine, the other is called a bendix, which pushes the starter gear out to engage the flywheel, and then after the engine engages, retracts it (except in the case of starter/generator combo units which recharge your battery and power your vehicle's electricals while the engine is running) Always best to get a bench test rather than depending on apparent symptoms.

Snowthrower starter will not engage flywheel

It shouldn't engage the flywheel except during the moments when you're trying to start the engine. Any other time, it should NOT be engaged so it isn't spinning the whole time the engine is running.

Generac 17kw standby generator, starter will not engage into engine, just spins

If it spins and will not engage it needs removing and the bendix gear on the starter is probably worn or damaged

Generac 40kw single phase generator starter engages after 30sec of running

For the over voltage there is an adjustment on the control board.
Should be tested with a load something plugged in.
The hertz might just come on when under load and adjusted too.
If you need more give a model number and whether it is 13kw or 40kw.

Generac 6500 1988 in R.V.Southwind Two things, both only occur in the morning or when cold (I am in So Cal so not that cold). First, when starting the generator from the dash board starter button the light...

See if there is an oil pressure guage on the dash. When you start the machine it probably has a low oil pressure shutdown which shuts the engine off when you release the start button. This is an interlock. Watch the oil guage and keep the start button engaged until you see oil pressure, release the button and it will continue to run at that point. Your second issue may be a function of the choke. If you are having to choke the engine to start, you may have to play with the choke position to keep from overfueling the unit which may cause it to stall and possibly backfire as it has to much fuel to be burned on the compression stroke, and is igniting occasionally on the intake stroke. Hope this helps. Marvin

Some gensets have a reverse generator that actualy rotates the motor until running then switches back and produces power. But the starter could be in the front of the engine looking like a altrnator or some such device. good luck..

Hi Mike,
Your particular model generator uses the output of the generator to decide if the engine is running or not. You need to look at wires S15 and S16 at the control board to see if you're getting 120VAC while the generator is running. A quick simple test is to just see if there is output at the power wires that go to the transfer switch from the generator. The thing you don't say that ought to be happening is that the control board should crank the engine 3 times with a 15 sec or so pause in between crank attempts, then it should shut down and light up the "fault" lamp and quit.
Bottom line is that if you're getting 240 VAC across the output at the breaker, you've probably got a bad controller or wiring to it broken, otherwise you've got some kind of excitation problem keeping you from making electricity.

Regards,
Carl
