Laptop won't boot

By icebreaker on Sep 05, 2007

Lap only boots to startup config screen (safe mode/last known good etc. won't go to any of these - just keeps rebooting.) Tried the xp floppy boot disc (on ext. drive) & GET THE SAME RESULT.
Don't know how to get to recovery screen (if it has one !)tried F10/11 However,it will go to BIOS screen. I don't have the original disc to reformat the drive & I can't see any support button on the Evesham site to get one.

Can you advise,
Many Thanks,
icebreaker

- Thanks again, would you know what causes this problem

Sep 06, 2007

- Thanks, I managed to get the recovery console going, did fixboot & the boot sector was corrupt. the rec.said it it repaired the boot sector.I restarted it & the pc was back to square one.
What can I deduce from this (is the hard drive beyon repair ?)

- Sorry, I don't have the original XP home disk to \i386 it, just XP PRO off my other pc's.

Sep 07, 2007

- Thanks, the problem still exists even though I used FIX/MBR (after FIXBOOT)as well.I used a windows 98 boot disk to get it going, then I used 6 XP HOME boot disks to get into recovery console.Console comes up with the options Just as the C: prompt and not C:\WINDOWS. However I tried various actions as a test and they seemed to work.

If I reformatted the drive (if it allows me to !) can I install O/S from WINDOWS XP PRO. disc I already have off my other pc & would I do this as a normal installation of off \i386.
If it's off \i386 folder, how would I pull it off the disc.
Cheers,
Freddie

try using a WINDOWS ME edition startup floppy disc. I had good results with this version. I can send if you want. This will allow disc access to investigate the problem. You will still have XP on disc.

- well, you tried the xp floppy disc...same method...you will get a choice screen to select boot only or boot with cd-rom drivers. first boot with out cdrom then run scandisk (off floppy) on c drive to correct errors. then attempt to read c drive and somehow backup all important data because you will lose everything on hard drive after next events to follow. then reboot and run format c then reboot with cdrom drivers and begin installing xp all over. remember, you will lose everything on hard drive. hope you have xp cdrom, also. ready? then reply with email to get floppy files.

- by saying "back to square one", do you mean the problem is still bad or do you mean problem is gone?
I don't believe you need the xp home, except if special cd with oem drivers for this manufacturer laptop. if you feel you can get all drivers, then any xp install disc should work.
remember to run scandisk if you ever get drive to be recognized again by system. the hd may not be dead yet.

- please clarify: "...XP PRO. disc I already have off my other pc"...do you have the cd or not?
although it may be possible to install xp via a wired (or wireless) pc-pc connection, I do not recommend it at this point. you should create the cd from the other pc's xp install files (assuming you actually have copied the xp cd onto the other pc hd). about re-formatting drive, be aware that if you want NTFS instaed of FAT32, you must reformat using XP (or 2000) startup disc.

My dad just bought a used Toshiba Satellite A70: A70 Intel Pentium 4 processor 3.06GHz, 512MB RAM, 80GB hard drive, DVD-RW multi... PC Notebook. This laptop came without a O/S. We did receive the System Restore DVD but we are having problems. When we try to install the recovery it will only run for about 5 minutes and the laptop shuts down. We restart and it says it is continueing to install windows. Please give me exact directions so that I know I am doing this correctly. We have a copy of Windows 98 with the key code. What am I doing wrong? Please help.

acer travelmate series 2310 says we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. a recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
if your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose last known good configuration to revert to most recent settings that worked.
if a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally.
safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
last known good configuration(your most recent settings that worked)
start windows normally
I tried all of these options and it won't boot
