Question about Explorer Appliances GRQ10 Top Freezer Refrigerator

Odors from gas fridge

Our Explorer fridg is maybe 5 years old. It is in a cabin at 5000' in elevation. When we experienced fumes, we had the gas comapny man out to service it and he ordered the smallest orifice he could get and installed it. Did not correct the problem. He manually made the orifice smaller....stillwe have unpleasent odor. He tells us it's because of the elevation, not enough oxygen, that it burns rich and we have odor. I refuse to believe that we paid over $1500 for a frig that we can't use. It has been unused for the last 2 years. HELP, what else

We will give it a try. If it does not solve the problem, would it be okay (saftey) to move the fridge outside on the porch or deck?

If so, at least the fumes would be outside and when we'd still have our cold storage.

Unfortunately, your gas man was largely correct. At higher altitudes you need to reduce the gas flow to compensate for the thinner air, and therefore smaller quantity of oxygen. Eventually, you reach a breaking point, where there isn't enough gas to run the appliance. However, it is entirely possible that, while he had the theory right, he was incorrect about not being able to make this work. If it still smells, you need a smaller orifice. Whether the refrigerator will work with a smaller orifice, I don't know. If you really want to give it a try though, make sure that gas line is off and remove the orifice that's on there now. Then take it to another gas repair man (I'm sure you can find one in the phone book) and explain the problem. If he can get a smaller orifice, you're in business. If he can't, it's likely your gas man was right and there's nothing you can do.

Okay, I'm not a safety expert when it comes to gas lines, so I can't say this authoritatively. However, I think it would be safe. We've already determined that it has a very small nozzle, so it's not leaking a lot of gas. Also, the air is thin, which further decreases the chance of explosion. Having it outside, I would THINK it would dissipate enough to be safe.

However, I suggest getting a second opinion on that.

Gas fumes inside cabin

You may have a defective vapor recovery system or a loose hose coupling between the filler and the tank. The recovery system can go bad after a lot miles/time. Also, overfilling the tank (going beyond 'one click') can damage the system.
I would replace the gas cap first, make sure it is the right kind, before having the VR system checked.

I have a 22 yr old top freezer fridge. I took it to my cabin last year when I bought a new one for the house. However, it does not work-get cold at all. We don't leave the electricity on when we are not at...

ok Sounds like a place i would love to go but .... First, if the trip to the cabin was very bumpy chances are it sprung a leak and lost its gas charge , if this is the case , repairing it may cost more than replacement depending on the location of the leak , if the trip up to the cabin was smooth then consider this, When moving it around to load it up did you maybe move it around suddenly , and if you did this too would cause a leak specially considering  the age of the system, chances are its lost its charge and would require leak testing and repair , here in Australia anywhere up to $ 600.00

AC,DC, gas RV fridge Dometic

You more than likely need to replace the control cable between the upper and lower board. It comes as a kit with the upper board. You can also do a bypass test by unplugging your thermoster from the circuit board. The thermoster is the temperature control for the refrigerator nothing to do with the freezer.

Explorer Gas Refrigerator

I have a 12 cubic foot explorer and have found that if the burner is not keep clean the effiency will go down. I also found that adjusting the flame to the lowest temp does not keep the fridge the coldest. Adjust the flame until you get an even blue flame with minimal yellow in it.You make the adjustment with the temp control. Also clean the chimney, I use a gun cleaning kit. Thanks Dennis
