Question about HP Officejet Pro L7780 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

HP L7780 always reports empty magenta cartridge

Right out of the box printer was initializing and half way through reports an empty magenta cartridge (after printing a report page in magenta). Bought new cartridge and no difference. The display printer at Staples ALSO has the exact same problem. So there is an apparent mfg problem? I checked the 4 spring contacts that read the small data EEPROM on the ink cart all look good; so going to order printer #3 and hope it works. For the seconds that the printer worked, very impressive... FAST. I also like the low price of the ink carts. Any other ideas as to why ink cart is reported empty when it is not?

I did verify that +5v, GND, Data and Clock signals are present into the magenta cartridge EEPROM. All of the EEPROMS are wired in parallel, so if it can read all of the other cartridges, then it has to be able to read this one too.

So this is either a firmware problem in the printer; or else the EEPROMs in the magenta carts are not being programmed as being full???

The printer reads the data from the EEPROM to recognize that it is indeed a magenta cartridge and it is there.... but reads that it is empty.

Same problem right out of the box with magenta. Bad production problem?

Hi, The issue can be resolved by just shaking the ink cartridge slightly by holding the nob closed so that the ink mixes and then insert the cartridge back in the printer this should fix the issue... You can also power cycle the unit by unplugging the power chord and replugging it back by keeping the printer turn on and make sure that the all the cartridges are out while powercycling the unit, This will fix the issue check ..

Printer will not print blue, prints pink instead

Blue is made from magenta (pink) and cyan ( sky blue), if your blues are coming out pink then they are missing the cyan component.

In your machine this could be caused by a blockage in the printhead, the cyan cartridge being empty, an electronics fault, a boma pump fault (the squishy black thing on the base of the cartridge). Check your cartridge first - if it feels lighter than the other it is probably empty. Sometimes there is a fault where the entire contents of a cartridge (usually the cyan) can be emptied in a matter of days or less. If the cartridge is unusually empty compared to the other colours - refer it to HP.

The printer is suddenly reporting all ink cartridges are empty when they are not.

High probability of a main board electronics failure and/or waste ink chamber is full. It is probably cheaper and quicker to just replace the machine

Have replaced Magenta twice in two weeks. Does not recognize it.

There are only 2 reasons why this problem happens to your printer:

1) This usually happens if your printing heavy graphics.
2) You are using HP refilled ink

Take note HP always suggest us to always replace your ink with original HP ink cartridge

OfficeJet 9130 incorrectly reporting empty ink cartridge

Look to see if there is dirt or other debris inside the Magenta Ink slot. There is probably something there disrupting the ink flow. Use a flash light to see if ink is clogged. Use Acohol with Q tip to clean the area and reinsert the ink cartridge. Make sure the printer is off and the slot has dried before turning the printer back on.
Hope this helps. Helen
