Question about Brother HL 1440 Laser Printer
For years my Brother 1440 printer has correctly printed all envelopes with the print in the proper direction along the length of an envelope. It suddenly started printing across the short width of the env. In the settings it shows that it is set to print face down in the center of carrier as always. I even deleted and reinstalled the drivers. Any suggestions appreciated.
Before printing an envelope, try toggling the print orientation in the printing properties. If it's horizontal, select vertical - if it's vertical, select horizontal. That may sort it out for you.

Go there and click "I Accept", that little thing will uninstall your current printer driver.

Do the same here:

This is the full software package for Windows XP. Everything I linked you to here is straight from Brother's website.
Install that once downloaded and see where you get - also try my previous suggestion before and after doing this.
If all the above fails to correct your problem, you can always try a system restore. You can find system restore at:
Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
This little thing will completely revert your computer back to a specific date, so if you have a restore point back to a date where you could print your letters correctly, you can choose that and Windows XP will restore your computer back to that time and it should sort your problem out.
Let me know how it goes.

What software are you printing from? It sounds more likely to be software causing the issue.

When you say reinstall the Win program, do you mean Windows? If so, it's probably a driver issue. You may have the wrong driver installed for your printer.
However, odd as it sounds, have you tried adjusting the settings in the Brother setup window to allow for putting envelopes in the short way in the center of the slot - but still put them in the long way? I had this same problem with a printer a few years ago, and doing that fixed it. The driver just had everything rotated 90 degrees.
Here's the most up to date version of the driver for XP I've found. Version 1.42. If this doesn't work, this site also has links to older versions... sometimes older versions work better (though usually not).

Without being able to dig into the desktop, I'm really not going to be able to answer that. This is one of those cases where fixing it is a lot easier than explaining it. Try downloading that driver and see if it helps.
Alright, that site must be messed up. Not a big problem, I found a few sites with that driver. Let me link 2 more for you - either of these should work.

I have been using Windows XP Home with SP-2.
For a long time it has printed the envelopes correctly. I had to reinstall the Win program to resolve a different problem.
I can't think of any other changes which could account for the sudden, unwanted change in the printer starting to everything in the page layout format. Its fine for everything except for envelopes.
The Brother setup window for envelopes shows it is set correctly to print face down, and inserting the envelopes the long way in the center of the slot.

I just thought of trying to print an envelope using my laptop running Windows Vista. It printed correctly.
I tried again on the desktop running Windows XP Home with sp2 and get the same result. It prints across the envelope instead of the length of it.
Any suggestions as to different driver?
John
I am confused as to why the same printer will print an envelope correctly from my laptop but has recently changed on the desktop to printing the wrong way on the envelope.

I tried twice to download your suggested driver and I keep getting this error message.
Warning: opendir(drvfiles/11432/) [function.opendir]: failed to open dir: No such file or directory in /home/drvkitnet/public_html/index.php on line 259

I have a Brother HL-1400 Laser Printer. It suddenly started printing envelopes across the narrow width instead of the length. It used to do so correctly for a few years.
When I print an envelope using my laptop and the same printer, it prints correctly, making me believe that the problem is in my desktop rather than the printer. I have been unable to download and open any of the suggested drivers.
Thanks for any help you can give.
