It sounds like your heater is shutting off because the ambient temperature is higher than or equal to the target temperature you've chosen (shown on the LED display on the front of the machine):
The heater's intelligent thermostat is engineered to turn the machine on only when needed when the ambient room temperature drops below the target temperature. AM05's base is secured in place by a catch - you should see this if you look at the underside of the machine. You can open the catch at the same time as rotating the base to remove it.

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with your DC35. If the brush continually rotates when attached to the machine, this sounds like there may be a fault with the main body assembly.
