The main, most common solution is to replace the scart cable. (the lead which connects from the console to the tv.) The scart cable controls the sound and display. Good Luck!

I plug it in and only the fan will turn on

Something might be wrong with your Nintendo Gamecube as a whole. I'm not totally sure. I've heard of Gamecubes working, but the fan is broken, but the other way around, that's a bit strange. If you can post some more information, can you tell me if the Gamecube actually turns on to the point where it says "No Disc", or it just doesn't even show a picture when you hit the power button.

My gamecube is in black gray and white now.

Well most likely thats its the av cable or and the settings for the colour on the tv are turned to black gray and white or there is something wrong with the tv then not the console.

My sonic colours game auto selects the wrong controller type on initiating the game so no control is possible - how do I get to select the correct controlle

Make certain that you do not have any controllers plugged into the gamecube ports on the Wii console. We had DDR mats plugged into our console and the game would not recognize the wii controller.

During the game it will show a black screen and says that the disc cannot be read. what is wrong with it?

Clean the disc or buy a new game. The game is the only problem. Also if it does not work when you get a new game, consider getting your game cube checked out.
