I have had my MacBook Pro for two and a half years. A few days ago, the "spinning beach ball" appeared on the screen and I had to shut the computer down. When I tried to start it back up, it lit up but stayed on the blank, blue screen and made a repeated clicking noise under the left speaker. Nothing happened after that. I took it to the Apple Store, and the man at the Genius Bar told me it was hard drive failure (I'd assumed the problem involved my battery, which had gone through too many cycles to hold a charge. I'd been plugging-in only for about six months before this point.) He said that it would take $325 to replace the hard drive plus more for data recovery. He recommended some third-party places but said that Apple required anyone working on an Apple computer to send the old hard drive back to the company rather than giving it back to the consumer. This limits my data recovery options, which I know will add quite a bit to the $325 replacement. Do you have any recommendations about how to work on it myself, or where to find individuals who can do data recovery work outside of the limitations of third-party shops? Thanks,
You can contact this companies regarding data recovery. The "Genius" was wrong about the drive being retuned to Apple, that will only occur if you have a system under warranty, and you would be returning it to Apple to avoid being charged.
As far as replacement hard drive going for $325, that too is pretty steep, see this link:
My friend’s Macbook A1181
won't boot and the screen won’t light up. When I turn it on, the screen
flashes once for a split-second and goes blank.I keep my ear on top of HD and I hear some brief sound from the hard
drive and nothing more, it just keeps on spinning sounding normal. I don’t hear
the it loading OS or anything. The screen stays blank as if your laptop is not
on. I plugged in a brand new
unformatted HD; same result but no other sounds from the new HD except a normal
sound when it starts and continues spinning. The screen flashes the same way
when you turn it on but immediately goes and stays blank as it did with the old
drive. I took the new drive out and put
back the old HD. I think the battery is
OK.It did run 3-4 hours without a
recharge before this problem. When I do
plug it into a power supply it starts charging normally and becomes fully
charged. I have tested the ram (two
256MB Modules), with my other laptop. The
memory is good. I doubt it’s a HD problem.
If it was, I think the screen should light up and I should see something on the
screen. Any suggestion other than
get a new laptop?
