Get album art on g1

By IgmuHammerer on Apr 05, 2009

I just connected my g1 to my pc, mounted the sdcard, ripped a cd using Windows media player. My pc retreived the artist, album, and song names as well as the album art (a picture of the album cover) from the internet (CDDB.org, maybe?). I played the music on my pc with success. I copied everything from C:\Users\Igmu\Music to the dcim folder in the sdcard drive.
I ejected the sdcard drive from my pc, and removed the USB connection from th g1. I played the songs ripped from the cd using the default music app on the g1. It included the artist, album, and song names.

Now here's my problem, no album art was transfered to my g1. I am currently online with the g1. Is there somewhere I need to copy the album art from a diifferent folder on my pc & if so, what folder do I copy it to on my sdcard?

- Update, I found that the album art IS on my SDcard. Just hidden, but can't unhide it.
This is how I did it. I am using Windows Vista so it maybe different for other OSs.
Open windows explorer and goto each album where the individual songs are located, I did it by clicking Music from Start, then clicking on an artist, then the album. You should see the songs in that album. If you don't see the toolbar with File,Edit,View,Tools,Help then press ALT. Click "Tools", "Folder Options..." Then click on the "View" tab, goto the "Advanced settings:", then select "Show hidden files and folders" in "Hidden files and folders". ALSO, uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended). This allowed me to see the file that looks sorta like this..."AlbumArt_{4E539A7E-FAE1-42FD-84C1-28A7D2E65FE9}_Large.jpg".
Selected and copied the artists folders on my pc. Plugged in my g1, I need to hold the USB icon on the top of the screen for a couple seconds. It should expand downwards, then pull it down. open the USB connected by toucing it. Touch the "Mount" button on the screen.
Autoplay dialog box opens on my pc, select "open folder to view files" which opens "dcim" folder. Paste the music in that folder.
NOTE: You will not be able to access the sdcard from the g1 until you unplug the USB after you're done.
Once all the music is uploaded into the sdcard, goto "My Computer" on my pc, rightclick the sdcard drive(it should be named like "Removable Drive" or something, and select "eject".
Now remove the USB cable, Select "Music" icon in you apps, if needed select "dcim" folder, and touch the pictures.
I did all the stuff to no avail. Then started messing around. I cannot see the album art even though the jpg files are there, they are hidden. Could it be something with metatags in the music files? How do I change them if it is?

To do this you're going to have to re-copy all of the music you want album art for to your G1! Sorry! But here goes...
Firstly, the reason the album art isn't there is because it wasn't bought online, therefore the album art may not be encoded onto the songs. However it's not that hard to encode art yourself on Windows Media Player.
You have to look for the album art online, and save it on your computer. Then, find the songs you want on Windows Media Player (if they are from the same album then ctrl+click them all) then right click. On the right-click menu there should be an option called Advanced Tag Editor. Click that, then the Pictures Tab, and click Add. Then find your album art and select Cover (Front) from the Picture Type drop down menu. Hopefully that will encode your songs with the album art, then you can sync them with WMP or copy and paste them as normal.
